Here are a few specs and snaps of the three new G650s and a HP2 variant from BMW. They all share the same motor, which is a revised version of the F650GS mill. It still has fuel injection. But they have reduced rotational mass, the motor is2KG lighter, and increased horse power to 53 BHP from 50 BHP. The bikes all have high end suspension pieces, centralised mass, aluminum and steel frames, aluminum swing arms, under seat 9.5L tanks (250KMs), and available ABS. The big change is the weight. The bikes weigh 344Lbs, wet. You read that right WET .
There are three flavours:
Xchallenge
21" front wire wheel, 18" rear
45mm WP front suspension, air strut rear just like the HP2
300mm front wave disk, 240mm rear disk
10.63" travel front and rear
0-62MPH 4.01s, top speed 165 KMH
3.6L/100KM

No firm price yet but with the premium content I would expect $12,000-$14,000. Who knows we have a very strong Canadian dollar so it might be cheaper.

Funny how the response to this model is so posative and the new KLR was semi negative. Like all BMW's I like it right up to the point we start talking money. I'm guessing they won't have to worry about selling new KLR's at 1/2 to3/4 the price of the Beemer.

I think that's probably because the KLR 2.0 has been pushed more towards the street and away from the dirt, meanwhile BMW has taken it's more street ready bike and made it into a dirt-ier bike.
Maybe if Kawasaki had the same money behind it, they would've done the same and made a 'tard, a dirtbike and a street machine.....

After seeing Scotty905 make it up the Widowmaker on his KLR 650 I have officially quit under-estimating that bike. I suspect the new version will surprise as well. But each to their own. Maybe there's too much sportbiker left in me but I can't ignore the fact that for the same money as the BMW I could have a new CBR 600RR. Or a KLR 650,with a trip to Alaska, some riding lessons, and a winter trip to Baja.
Of course if you have the money then buy what you like. BMW owners are generally happy with their bikes and very brand loyal. German stuff is usually well made but overpriced(I worked for a German company for several years so I know of what I speak.).

This only applies 'till the warranty runs out and they have to start paying for the new trannies, final drives, screwed up ABS, etc, etc. BMWI think hasreached the limit of most riders pocket books. :shoot:They are now in the realm of the over 40yrs poseur with themortgage line of credit. That is why they have to flog 'em with low financing so that riders can semi-afford to buy them.
These newBMW's are pretty ugly if you ask me. For the same money you can pick up a nice used V-Strom (I know it is ugly too) for touring and dirtroad exploring and a real dirt bike like a KTM 300-450 (used also) for the more hard core dirt stuff.
But what do I know? I only rode Beemers for the last 17 yrs and now ride a Triumph :D

The best thing about Beemers is the warranty :tup:After 18,000kms my 1200 only needed a new tranny, clutch, rear shock, idler stepper motor etc. And they do not start once the temps go below 5c. Had one dealer tell me I should keep it parked in a garage when it gets cold. :shock:I asked how come the bike doesn't come with one?? :)
They are great bikes when they work. :hb:
Sorry to hear about your problems, but one lemon, does not make a brand bad. I have more Km's on mine and not a single problem. Like everything else, a small percentage will havea problem but the mojority are very high quality.... Only 5yrs, 8 months left on my warranty... how bout your Truimph...

It is an '04 Thruxton with 16,000kms on it. I bought it used with 9000kms last April so have put 7000kms on it since then. I ride the shit out of it :Dand have not had any problems. Cruise all day at 120-130kph. I can keep up with the crotch rocket crowd in the twisties too. The only downside is the small tank. Only has a 160km range before reserve kicks in.
The problems I had with my GS are common throughout the series. I am not the only one with a 'lemon'. Just go to ADVrider.com to find out more. There is a neat photo of one guys GS with therear final drive on fire :hr: I am glad you are having good luck with yours. 6 yrs warranty does give you a little piece of mind. Still doesn't help you when you are in the middle of your holidays and your bike is broken down in 'Butthole, Idaho' 300 miles from the nearest dealer.
Back on topic, I still think BMW are going down the wrong road. They have alienated a lot of their former devotees and are shooting for a totally different crowd now. I think the problem is that this group of riders are not really interested in Beemers for the exact same reason that the former devotees liked Beemers. BMW still has a 'Pipe and Slippers' reputation with younger riders (under 40) and a couple $10-13,000 dirt bikes is not going to improve it.

I think the old F650GS & Dakar look way better. What's with the 9.5 litre tank... are they going to be offering a touring version?
Besides... none of them look half as good as a dirty ol' KLR... :P

Wah wah wah ... I sold the KTM and the Blade for an Aprilia....and it's been plagued with problems right away. I was gonna get rid of the Mille and get a SXV550 or the RXV 550 and try that again....
I have comitment issues for sure...and like and old horse...I should be SHOT...:shoot:

Can't swear to it at this time but I'm pretty sure it's the standard 650s 10,000KM interval.

Hahaha...so does our head mechanic too...the new guy does it all !!:shoot:
Well, I'm an X-BMW Guy that had more problems with it than any other bike in 35 years motorcycling !:mad2:Having said that, I enjoyed 2 1/2 years and 60k with it and the warranty backup was excellent throughout. Having switched to KTM, I now realise what a huge challenge BMW faces trying to compete with anything off road that is orange, but at least they are trying, which is more than can be said for the Japanese manufacturers ! The current offerings of Dual sport bikes in N. America from the Japs is absolutely pathetic. Keep it up BMW (as long as you keep the 3yr Warranty!)
