The scene at Branscombe
ANCIENT legislation may be called upon to stop looters raiding cargo washed ashore at Branscombe from the beached MSC Napoli.
Up until now people have been able to take the goods washed ashore, as long as they filled out a form and they did not refuse to give it back when requested.
However powers not used for 100 years will be used to force people to return goods recovered from the stricken container ship, which was beached a mile off shore during storms last week.
So far thousands of pounds worth of items, including brand new BMW motorbikes, car parts, beauty products and nappies have been taken.
Separate laws will also be used to ban the public from Branscombe beach.
The police believe organised gangs are behind the worst of the looting and have been targeting the beach.
