Why did I buy this bike?
For a long time I have wanted a BIGGER dualsport, a v-twin. Something that with a bit of coaxing could go through a chalenging "B" section and still have big balls on the blacktop,And to be able to take wifey out on longer trips, overnight and such. The DR650 didn't have enough seat room for that.
I did a search and found a few bikes guys were building. An SV650 set up for dirt, looked prety cool but would have cost a bunch of cash to set up with dirt suspension . A harley engine in what looked to be a modified KLR frame I think, and some expensive suspension parts. That would have been too heavy and waaaaay too expensive to build....and where do u build it(but mostly it had a HArley engine and trans). Then Aprillia came out with their 450 and 550(?)..too exotic for me. Even thought bout buying a friend's Shadow 750 and giving that a try. But same problem. How far do u go, how much u wanto to spend, and how dirt worthy will it be?
Then one day we set up a ride in Kelowna, and there was a fella there with a 950ADV, first one I had seen in person. We all pulled out on the road and he gave'r some juice and passed me:hr:Thats the bike I want:ted:
Long story short, The 950R se was born:), as soon as I saw it I knew that was the bike I wanted. All the power of the 950ADV but fewer body pannels to brake and maybe better off road suspension.
I just wasn't sure of KTM"s reliability. All the threads I read, the bikes all seemed to have the same problems. Fuel pumps, waterpumps, soft rims tricky oil and coolant changes and it seemed every ride that a KTM came on the KTM always needed trail side repairs(talk'n the smaller ones though) . I liked the Jap bikes.
So this bike became available and the time was right so I said "Fak it", and like a man,I begged my wife for permission to buy it;)
She said YES and so we went and got it:dr:I just hope all my worries were for nothing. This is what we will find out in this therad over this summer.
================================================== =========
Pros and Cons.......
PROS
Well the price seemed prety good to me, 2000k on the odo and $4000 less than the new 08 beside it in the showroom, and in mint condition.
New scorpions front and rear, and RTR threw in new front and rear Ralley Raids D606.
Front forks have compression and rebound adjustments but also have externalspring pre-load adjustment also.
Rear shock comp and rebound also.
240 watt charging system
all electrical circuits are run on relays, no high currents going through the switches on the bars
All the circuits are fused in an easy to access area under the seat
A disconnect to change the engine timing for those poor quality fuel areas..like BAJA!
Oh..and the power, did I mention the power?
Keep forgetting I have 6th gear !
CONS.......
13L tank !
I get 160kms untill the fuel light comes on, then it's 10L to fill it. That figures to 41.5 mpg, although I may have been a little throttle happy over the last 2 days. Hopefully the mileage increases over time, but a 20L tank is in the works.
Poor jetting.
I think it runs really lean. "pops" on de-cell, surges on the highway, small hessitation when cracking throttle on the highway but when it grabs it pulls verry hard. It also has all that polution crap on it. I hear even looding that crap smooths out the jetting prety good.
Exhaust Heat
The mufflers have catylitic convertors built in them ....do they ever hold the heat! I think I need to make a cpl small heat shields. Although once I get rid of the stock cans I think it will be alright.
================================================== ==========
Well it looks like the "Pros" out weigh the "Cons"....so far :)
The best "PRO" is that now Lisa actually enjoys going out riding.:dr:
SO here is what I posted the day I picked up the bike. More to follow as I learn about this beast.
OH.....MY................GOD!
This bike ROCKS!
Picked it up bout 1 this afternoon...from RTR Performance. Just got home ..9:45pm:dr:(Well I did stop home to cook dinner for Lisa and the kids..then I was G-O-N-E ......GONE) !
The bike has power to spare, kinda let down though, cant do a wheelie under 4th gear......only spins :hr:. First time I gave'r some good throttle I was on a frontage rd in 3rd, twisted the throttle bout 1/2 way and the engine started to spool up a bit then kinda stumbled a bit( needs jetting , it's running verry lean) then all of a sudden the rpm's jumped waaaay up and I let off the throttle....."What the hell was that"? Looked in the mirror behind me and there was 40 foot patch of rubber on the pavement:tup:.
I fueled up and went boot'n round town for a few hrs..even stoped by work, showed the boss and asked if I could have tomorrow off also cuz I had something to go and do.....;)
I headed up to Batch for a little(verry little bout 8k) dirt ride. On the up hills this bike was far superrior the DR650. Not only for the power but for handling the whoops and bumps, ruts and rocks. It even felt lighter. When on the throttle it went where u wanted it to go . Down hills were a different story, front felt a little washy, maybe I was just going too slow/ too cautious, but didn't really want to scratch it up yet:)Scorpions front and rear...knobie style(not sure the model but 80% dirt)
On the highway......:hr:again. Cruzes nice and smooth. Clean air like a dirt bike. Tank blocks a lot of the wind from the legs, will need to install small shield to take wind off chest. ZERO to 140 in nothing flat . 100k roll on was prety cool, I wish it had a tach, pulls really good untill about 120 or so then it REALLY pulls...and just keeps comming on harder and harder. Has a power band close to a 2-smoke, but may just be the jetting.
Did a 3rd gear GIVE'r with Connor on the back, 150Lbs, instead of spinning, did a 150 foot power wheelie. But don't tell mumma bout that.
When I figure out the photo gallery I will post a pic.
MORE FUN TO COME !!

Even with the ongoing concerns I had with the water pump, I still love my bike & the capabilities that it has.
We have what u might call a " 950 Guru" here in Kamloops. Ken Darvin , http://www.alternatecycle.com/index.html . He has the jetting and all other "issues" with these bikes figured out.
Next week I will take it in and get a set of WINGS cans installed , the jetting done, SAS and Canister removal. The stock exhaust cans feel to be about 25Lbs or so, the Wings feel to beless than 1/2 that .
He says the waterpump starts to leak at 20,000k. Do regular oil changes and you will see the oil filter just start to swell a little. That is the first sign that the pump seal has failed. I think he said about $100 to do the fix, but has also heard the 07/08 models have been updated at factory.
Rear tire is hook'n up prety good on the pavement now...the edges are worn off the tire. Can't waite to get the skid plate so I can finally get out in the dirt.
Every time I Give'r on the pavement I say to myself " I can't beleave I have a Sportbike again":)

The heat problem is easily rectified. I cut the pipe about 1 inch up from the flange. The cats just fall out. Weld it back together and you're good to go. You still get the advantage of a muffler (not obnoxuos noise) it still looks stock (popo) and it's cheap (me). This also clears up the popping on deceleration and no more heat.
Dave.

hey congrats on the bike. Looking good.
Unfortunately, the water pump issue was never resolved. The same problem still exists even on my 990. The change in '07 was that KTM changed the terms of its warranty and the waterpump became a wear item just like oil filters and tires and is no longer covered.
Oh and take care not to over fill after an oil change... its easy to do

Started up a verry long loose silty rocky hill today. About 1/3 of the way up I had second thoughts about it..... then realized it was too late for that. A little more throttle and it was all over, the top came up prety fast ....only in 2nd gear.
The bars are too straight for me, the wrists get really sore. Anyone ever try bending the bars to fit?

I turned the bars down a little, they seem to be ok now.
Took the family out for the afternoon, wanted to try it out in the dirt riding 2-up. Works good, nice and plush but never bottomed out. Mumma smaked me when we did a jump and her but came off the seat:hr:

Where we unloaded the kid's bike there was a sweeeet jump. It was about a 2 foot dip in the parking lot and the take off point was ramped up and about 15 feet long. I think i was only jumping about 10 feet in distance on the dr and it was rough, on this new bike it was about 20"and smooth. Did about 10 laps it was soo fun. But no pics... camera was in the truck:(

Congrats Joker - lovely bike !:clap:All of the running issues should go when you get your man to do the canisterectomy and change the pipes. I've heard that someone is making waterpump kits to solve that issue (better innards &seals or something).
BUT - you havn't mentioned the best bit !! - The SOUND !!

The cans I am getting have 2 different size tip inserts, this gives you 3 different db output levels.Full open is prety loud he says.
Install the first insert (held in by a screw)and the db goes down a lot, and yes it sounds sweet.
Pull the screw back out and install the 2nd insert inside thefirst one. This gives the lowest db reading and is prety close to stock.
The tip inserts are small and light so can be carried on a trip incase u want a db change(sneaking home late).
So now u can ride to the dragstrip all nice and quiet and literally 1.5 min later u are wide open and ready for the strip. Why u may ask did I use the Drag Strip as an example, we have the Ashcroft track 60min from my house. Was kinda think'nnn ...........
Ken at Alternate Cycle sets up the jetting for the first insert, that way it's set up prety good for either all or none of them .

The bag is prety cool. Has Velcrow straps, bungee cords and adjustable snaps for mounting, verry solid when tightned up .Went out for a "milk Run". 1 gallon of milk , a bag od tacos, a bag of BBQ chips(and the BIG bags not the small ones) and a ring od garlic coil. All fit nicely and secure.

For those longer trips that Mrs.Joker tags allong there is plenty of expandable storage via a zipper that goes all the way arround the bag. And it works good as a backrest for her also.

The kickstand is actually bolted to the engine case half :hr:. Seen pics where the stand hit a rock and crackes the eng case. SO I figured this was the first peice to splurge on.

Sorry.. I forgot to look at the brand. But they also have saddle bags and fender bags. Bought them from our local SUZUKI dealer.
I also bought this shield (forget the brand also...will get back bout that). Was tagged at $120......but had 1" of dust on it so they gave it to me for $50 taxes in.
Made it easily removable with a 10mm wrench, 4 small nuts.

Almost ready for BAJA!
Had a cpl hours to kill yesterday so headed out for a "Street Weenie" ride. Picked up my tank bag andheaded to Cash Creek.

Tank bag holds about 12 beer when expanded up and 6-8 when 'zipped' short. Nice mounting via front strap arround steering head and adjustable straps at the back with clips that hook to one of the frame spars.

Today we hit the DIRT :dr:
joker650
04-22-2008, 10:13 PM
Well it's been 22 days and 1500k. I figure about 500k of this is in the dirt.
Got my new Ralley Raid from RTR Performance, they threw it in with the bike along with a matching front. I hear this is the tire that works on the rear of this bike the best.
The old one sure looks sorry...but worked verry well for it's short life.:)
http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/500/16wings_006.jpg (http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/showphoto.php?photo=10650&sort=1&cat=500)
The bike has 3500k on it now. It has started to run prety crapy on the hi way. Alot of surging and a long lag in throttle responce when at speed, but would "catch" after holding the trottle open for about 3 seconds......verry un acceptable. On Sunday before we headed out riding I removed the 17 front sprocket and put on the 16t. Make a nice differance in the bush.
I've been waiting for the jet kit to show up at Alternate Cycle so I could get the carbs set up properly.
Well the kit came in so I droped the bike off last night and they worked on it all day.
New Jets, New WINGS:dr:, all the emision crap GONE!
http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/500/16wings_003.jpg (http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/showphoto.php?photo=10652&sort=1&cat=500)
The inserts are not in the pipes right now, I feel the note is too loud, bordering on ...dare I say Harlie !:hr:I was kinda embarrased riding through town home.:(Gunna install the first core and see how that goes, I think it will be just right.
When I picked up the bike another guy showed up with the exact bike, a 2008 completly stock...jetting , tires, pipes and sprockets.
He followed me out for a test. First thing I noticed was the sound, too loud for the street or bush.
2nd....imediate throttle responce, just what I was looking for. :)
Took it up to 175-180k and wow...it still pulls.
We stoped at a set of lights and I told the other fella to gat up to 80k and lets do a roll-on in top gear. So that's what we did.
I pulled away prety good..I was verry happy with that, I figure it was about 3 bike lengths in 500 feet. Money well spent:ted:
We got back to the shop and he asked if that was 5th gear like he indicated just before we throttled on. I said NO, that was 6th. He was quite impressed how I pulled away from him with him in 5th and me in 6th......me too:)
Yup....I think I'm really gunna like this bike.:ted:
Oh...and after riding you can hold your hands on the wings.....they work awsome.

25 days and 1700k... the Pirelli Scorpions are BAKED!
Time to rip and tare. And open a beer.
Nice how the rear wheel comes off. 1 BIG aluminum nut , no kotter pin and no need to move the chain adjusters.:)

Poped one side off and removed the tube.
WHAT"S this ?! Looks like the spoke nuts are ready to puncture the tube, just like the thread I read on ADV!

Upon closer inspection I see that 8 spoke nuts are worn through the rubber tube protector. Crazzzy man. This is a heavy rubber ring and the nuts have gone right through it. Never saw that on any of my JAP bikes.:mad3:
I figure a few more rides and the tube would have been flat. Luckly this thing goes through back tires ;)

Hard to see in this pic but since I had no DUCT Tape,so I used a sticky-backed rubber about 1/8th inch thick to cover the nuts , then re-installed the rubber ring.

Calgary noob here - been lurking on your great site for a while. I just have to say... that 950SE is the sexiest looking bike I have ever laid eyes on. It's what Ducati, Buell and Suzukishould have done with their V-twins... sure hope this isn't a one-shot deal from KTM. Would be nice to see more models like this from them in the future (naked big-bore dual sport bikes).
Cheers,

I agree 100%
If the DL1000 was way more dirt I might have got it. But it was too streety and heavy.
On the weekend had a bit of a problem with the new bike. We were into a nice tight woods trail poping over down logs and I noticed the temp was getting waaay up there and the fans werent coming on. We got out of there and headed down the road a little and the temp came back to normal. Heading up into a snowy area the temp came back up again :mad3:....WTF?
SO un done the tank a little to check the fans were pluged in and they were, fuse was good. Looked for the eng coolant temp sender and thought I found it on the engine and it was pluged in also.
Therw it back together and continued with the ride..just kept the speeds up a little.

When I got home I took the tank right off. Then I foind the coolant temp sender. It was in the rad...I had my mind in the automotive side with the senders in the block.
Ends up when they did the carbs he must have unpluged the sender and not pluged it back in:X

Bought an all weather outlet from CDN Tire, about $10 or so .
I figured the left side would be the best spot for it. It's spring loaded cap is rubber sealed but I figure in the side stand in the rain there is less chance for water to het in.
Hogged out the side of the beazel.

Joker, I put the same tire as you are running on my Adventure. I really like it in the dirt, but it seems to wander a bit on the pavement. Have you noticed this and does the wandering go away after the tire wears a bit?

It seems to track straight and true. Now that I think about it, I never even balanced that sucka when I put it on, but runs smooth right up to 180k. I've been getting the carb settings fine tuned and after 3 tries i THINK IT MAY BE JUST RIGHT. I droped it off Friday and picked it up on my way home. Today on the way to work it all felt like butter...everything was soo sooooo smooth. The adjustment before was on the lean side and was a little rough . Gunna hit the single track on Wednesday to check it out.
I was a little bit spoiled with that Pirelli that was on the rear when I bought the bike. Man did that tire ever hook up in the dirt, on the pavement it just spun.
I guess I should do another instalment.
U wanna meet in Vernon for a short day ride this weekend....Saturdy? I think I can swing it....I think:hf:

Well I really like the bike.
It does has a cpl draw backs.
Here is one.
Broke my sub frame
Carrying 5L fuel some water and munchies on a 400k ride.
Broke right in front of the tail light.
Will post up some pics tomorrow.
I think it's all aluminum so repairs should be straight foreward. Gunna have to gusset it up some also.

Part of the fun as long as the sub frame can be fixed and beefed up. That proves your really riding it and not juet letting it sit like a trophy all poslished up and no where to go. My vstrom use to die all the time too, but it was because the dealers set the idle to 900 instead of 1100 rpm. KTM probably leans them out too just like Suzuki to pass emissions. Not sure though, but nothing a little tinkering won't fix hopefully.
Whoops! Just read your thread some more and you already talked about it being lean.

One down fall of the SE is the fuel range(not MPG, 45 is what it gets, 2-up or single), but at 150k I don't want to have to push the sucka anywhere. so I've been carrying a 5.5L KOPLIN tank I got from Robert.
I have used it for 2 long rides, the DZ and a LSDS pre-ride that was 400k.No problems untill about 200 into the LS pre-ride, thats when the Vibes made the rear portion of the sub frame brake.
It broke right behind the rear seat mount.
But it didn't effect finishing the ride .

45mpg is good. My dl1000 gets about 52mpg in Summer and 45 in spring and fall no matter how I ride it and with 2-up or not too. Seems they change our fuel or something at the pumps when it gets colder. My tank always flashes round 270k and then will run to 370k theoritically, but around 300k I've always filled up as I start to get worried. I need to start carrying a 5 litre can of gas too. Too bad about the subframe, looks disappointing, but it happens to many bikes all the time. I hate to see it happen, but as long as it is the sub frame and not the main frame it's all good. I even drilled out my sub frame on my KLR and used that through bolt kit from dual star as was worried about it snapping too.

Well If I had ur money....hey , I just had an idea;)
The other problem with the SE is that it's a tire eater....But it's sooooooo much fun :ted:
the bike has 8500k on it, of witch I have put on 7000. That 7000k has me on my 3rd rear and 2nd front.

Ok...I'm back.
Fresh beer and new pic:clap:
SO they call for a light oil in the hydraulic system.
I think what the problem with this system is is that the verry small amount of hyd oil in the slave cylinder just gets too hot mounted on the side of the transmission and needs to be changed quite often.
After some reading I found I was not the only one that thought this way.
Although it's too late for the seal in this slave cylinder I'm just going to flush the system with some new -heavier- oil and see how it works for a cpl weeks(the leak is verry verry small)
SO afer finding my AMSOIL(did u see it in the pic). I compaired it to some 15w fork oil.
hm....what is lighter?
I used the fork oil.
http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/500/16clutch_cyl_004.jpg (http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/showphoto.php?photo=12390&sort=1&cat=500)
SO I filled up the resevoir .......about 6 times.
http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/500/16clutch_cyl_009.jpg (http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/showphoto.php?photo=12388&sort=1&cat=500)
ANd blead the system untill the new oil came out.

SO I put the cap back on....leaving the resevoir full to the top, allowing the rubber seal to push out any eccess fluid, leaving no air in the resevoir for those up-side-down times.
Clean up time....
Spray soapy water all over the frick'n place. (same water I use for doing tires).
http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/500/16clutch_cyl_012.jpg (http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/showphoto.php?photo=12389&sort=1&cat=500)
Then rince with a re-filled DZ08 water bottle.
http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/500/16clutch_cyl_014.jpg (http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/showphoto.php?photo=12384&sort=1&cat=500)
Spray and rince the slave cyl also.

And test......purrrrfect.

THe feel is a little stiffer with the heavier oil in there, but I will be putting a very good hi-temp hydraulic oil that I deal with at work.

......that said, I think all the brands have their issues.
DRZ400 , Waterpumps
KLR650...well too many to list(sorry)

x-challange...some FI problems (I think that what it was)
Honda...Ti valves
Yamaha..nothing worth riding (in a DS bike)
The list goes on.
LIke I said earlier in one of my first posts. There are a cpl known issues with the LC8 engine and they are well documented and seem to happen religously at certain km intervals.
I find myself paying attention to what I do with the throttle now. I know I have the LSDS 08 ride nex weekend so I am being verry gental with the throttle untill the ride.(I just put the new tireon 2 weeks ago):)...gotta make it last. The 400k pre-ride wore it 1/2 down :)

I lived in Austria for several years and raced a KTM 250 MX from 1977 on and then switched to a RM 250 so I know what you mean! But your right, all the bikes will have their known issues no matter what. I can't ride my V-Strom like you ride your SE so nothing goes wrong with it yet. If I start slamming it through the hills and start bouncing of the rocks and ride it hard, I bet issues will start unfolding as well and besides that, the V-Strom is not built to ride like that. I still think you have the best looking enduro out there.
Here's what I picked up on ADV forum . Maybe the subframe is a warranty thing.
"I had an 03 Adventure and a DRZ400, got rid of both and got an SE. Only major issue I've had is the subframe, it snapped about 4 weeks ago from corrugations, got the bike back today from the dealer, they replaced the subframe under warranty, so that was good. No real way to support it though, but the dealer tells me that if it keeps snapping, they'l keep doing warranty claims. My 07 SE came standard with rear pegs."

I like how easy it is to do anything on this bike
http://s3.amazonaws.com/advrider/icon10.gif Nine-5 OH Front axel removal
Working out of town and brought my bike with me.
Headed out for a ride after work...leaving the hotel the bike fels a little funny.
Stoped for fuel and...Oh NO!
Flat front tire http://s3.amazonaws.com/advrider/nod.gif
SO I searched for a spot to fix it and found a place that had a cpl broken concrete curbs and mad a stand to put the bike on.
SORRY NO PICS...yet
SO I remove the nut from one side and loosen the pinch nuts on the other side.
With the left side axel nut removed..looking inside the axel is a plastic threaded insert with a 10 or 12 mill hex head.
I put the aleln wrench with the proper socket on it (in the stock kit) on the plastic hex head a turned clock wise and gently pushed and the axel slit out verry easily.
(Maybe everyine already knew this..but I thought it was quite a good idea)
1/2 hr "L8T"r and I was back riding .http://s3.amazonaws.com/advrider/clap.gif
Here is the filling system I used.
Used 2 cartridges to pump ut the tube to check it while removed and fill to 28psi when installed.

Have you ever noticed your neck getting stiffer and cracking more than usual? I guess I'm snapping open the throttle too hard too often on my Vstrom and that would be the reason my neck is feeling the heat. Could also be that I am 49 already and my body is not as willing as it used to be. My Uncle was climbing apple trees at 91, so I'm not setting a good example at the moment :hr:

Here are a few stats:
The bike had 1500k on it when I bought it so this is from 1500k to now 12,478.
SO the cost for 10,978k: averaged out
= 78.4 fuel stops
= 844.4L of fuel
= $971 in fuel costs
= 2.5 front tires
= 3.5 rear tires
= 8L Motul Synthetic eng oil @ $19L
= 2 engine oil filters $40
= Re=useable air filter $100
= Black Dog skid plate $300
= 12v aux plug for GPS $12
=Heated grips $50
The bike is way hi:
I was hitting my knee all the time on the rear rack grab handles:hr:
I decreased 3 turns on the nut for the rear spring pre-load. This lowered the rear by about 1/2"...it was noticable:tup:

40 acres:
The turning radius is not verry good.
I think this is one of the shty things about this bike. KTM could have narrowed the frame at the steering stem a little to solve this. As it was, they had the screw stops quite far out. I adjusted them and it was alot better...but not much.

Usually at the beginning of a ride on some of the tighter stuff I find myself being too cautious, taking it easy as to not wipe out.
After about 1/2 hr or so I remember to ride the bike hard.
As soon as you start riding this bike agressivly it gets easier to ride:ted:.

I found the easiest way to get it in the back of the truck when I take the kid out riding is to just ride it up.

SEAT:
Seat is prety hard but on a long ride like the DZ or the Loose Screw it's not oo bad. It's when u have to sit for extended periods on pavement that ur but starts to get sore.
I'm going to change the stock seat a little. Going to cut out about 1.5" and put in some of that memory foam. It should be more comfortable and still have the same profile, But it just may get my arse closer to the ground also.
I am also going to buy another stock seat and modify it for hi-way use so Wifey will enjoy the ride more.

Repairs:
I had a problem with the clutch slave cylinder. All the fluid leaked out.
But I blead the system with new oil and have not had a preblem since. I will remove the parts for better inspection but I think just flushing new oil 2-3 times a year will work ok.

Rear tip of subframe broke.
Got it welded and beefed up.
Worked great the rest of the summer.

HAd another scare one day. I thought the engine was on it's way out.
Ended up a lower subframe bolt came loose....LOCTITE them bolts.

One of the first trail ride and the bike started to get HOT...and not cool down.
I didn't know too much about the bike at this point but it ended up I was on the right track.

PAvement:
Went with Jack on a hwy ride to Vernon......
All I got to say bout that was it didn't take too long to get there or back:)
It was fun but the combo of the Scorpion Pro(knobie) on the front and the Ralley Raid on the rear made the straight line stability SUK.

I never brought a patch kit when I went riding before.
I thought with this bike maybe I should.
Bought this from Leading Edge for $20....and needed it one day down in Langley.

The Skid plate is bolted up to the frame at the rear and the front of the oil tank.
The oil tank is rubber mounted and can rock a little in it's mounts.
The bottom of the rad is mounted to the top of the oil tank.....
http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/500/16BLACKDOG_010-med.jpg (http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/showphoto.php?photo=13715&size=big&sort=1&cat=500)
So............. puting tht bike up on a bash plate stand that I made has caused a little damage.
http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/500/16SUBFRAME_WOES_012-med.jpg (http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/showphoto.php?photo=12313&size=big&sort=1&cat=500)
Having the weight of the bike on the skid plate and the plate pushing up on the rad has bent the rad a little...but not enough to worry about.
I will be adding 2 small brackets to stiffen up the plate to the frame.

I can see me using that a lot, I have 4 KTM's in the garage and I find myself always working on one. Mostly my 450 but the kids bikes need servicing etc.

Kind if pricey though.....$499 :hr:
THis one has the optional air pump on it also....hook up the air and push the button. Watch the bike go Up..UP....UP.
I found it goes up quicker with the foot pump.
Add another $100 for that fancy air set up:shock:
I got prety lucky with this stand though. My sister just bought a new house and they don't have enough room for it.:clap::dr::dr::tup:
But now I will be doing services on ...of all things...Harlies :spl:
Worth the traid off though :ted:

Joker,
I spoke with a KTM rep at the bike show, apparently the 990SMT has a 19L tank and it fits the SE exactly. I wonder what the new SMT tank wouldbe worth?

I looked into it last year and the SM tank was about $1500 but u needed to buy the seat also(the SE seat did not lock or fit to the SM tank)
A small mod was needed to the rad cap to fit the tank also.
THere is a guy on ADV Rider that has that set up on his SE.
Ken at Alternate Cycle here in Kamloops tested the Sm set up on his SE.
Other than price that is the set up I would like.
Sounds like the Aqualine tank is causing some problems due to swelling on a few of the SE's.
But if u hear anything else let me know.........:hf:

SO Ryan Wright made me up a set of these light mounts.

Wired them in with one of these direct to Batt pos and batt neg, and controlled by a switch I mounted on the bars.

We were calling around today to pick up a 950r and the dealers said they go for $16,800 + tax/pdi. Didn't they go last year for around $13,800 in Kamloops or is my memory fading?

Thanks! She's a beauty, but the price is still a little scary! I saw one again around here in Salmon Arm and it sure is a nice big long bike, just my type of toy. Would never feel guilty riding the trails a little quicker than normal on it.
I found a few dealers in the US that will sell me a new 2008 950R and after the conversion and border crossing, I figure I still save around 3k, so might do that. Is the 2008 950 R the right model or are their better ones? I know there is also a Erzberg one too, but except for the graphics and for guards, it did not seem look much different. I was also wondering if the 2009 model had any changes. So far from what I read on your thread and the ADV threads, the bike has a water pump problem too, but that was about it.

SO last year at the Dead Zone the ol 95-OH started to become a handfull on some of the tighter stuff (that last 1k in the trees as a matter of fact):hr:.
I figured I would ride it out till winter then rip appart the carbs and see what's up.
Well winter has come and gone and it's riding season....I better get my butt in gear
I took the carbs off and started , did the rear first.
Here is what I found.
A peice of plastic in the Idle air jet that is located in the horn on the filter side of the carb. I think this was causing my problem of wanting to stall when the throtle was just moved. If I cracked it hard then it would not stall.
http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/500/16carbs_012.JPG (http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/showphoto.php?photo=18599&sort=1&cat=500)
This hard plastic adaptor is screwed to the filter side of the carb. It had a large shaved off peice from when it was replaced back on the carb, and that small peice came from here also.
http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/500/16carbs_013.JPG (http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/showphoto.php?photo=18595&sort=1&cat=500)
One of the othe rprobs I had ever since I got the carbs re jetted was a hanging idle.
I think this is why.
A missing o-ring on the idle air screw. Maybe a little air was sucked past the threads just enough to cause a lean condition.
The air screws are to be set at 2.75 turns out .
Front carb was set at 4.25 out and the rear at 3.25 out.....wtf?
http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/500/16carbs_006.JPG (http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/showphoto.php?photo=18597&sort=1&cat=500)
The floats are to be set at 2-3 mm.
One is set at 4mm
http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/500/16carbs_008.JPG (http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/showphoto.php?photo=18598&sort=1&cat=500)
and the other is set at 2.5mm
http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/500/16carbs_005.JPG (http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/showphoto.php?photo=18596&sort=1&cat=500)
SOthis kinda bumms me out cuz I paid good moola for the pros to set this thing up properly.
Guess ya have to do it ur self.
SO all I gotta do is re assemble the carbs, check the valves, change the plugs and coolant and it's time to ROCK!!:dr::woohoo:

37,000KM
Chain starting to make some noise.
Figures it's time for a change.
Rear sprocket looks not oo bad but will be replaced.

Front sprocket has about 1500k less that the rear one.
Quite a bit more wear...3 times as much.
http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/500/16partying_in_the_80_s_009.JPG (http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/showphoto.php?photo=20243&sort=1&cat=500)

All this wear on 96 mlinke(i think) added up to the chain being "streatched" by 3 pins or 1 and 1/2 links
http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/500/16partying_in_the_80_s_003.JPG (http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/showphoto.php?photo=20245&sort=1&cat=500)

Nex job.
Tackle the fuel pump.
Oh....and one pic for the road.

Yeah I was amazed that a 100hp bike could go through soo many rear tires and the chain still last that long.
I think the smoothnes and hp of the engine actually helpes the life span of the chain.
With all that hp the tire will brake free quite easily...and once u start spining traction is lost reduicing the strain on the chain....(sounded good in my head anyhow):shock:lol
