Dewdney, Dixon Lake, Chehalis FRS to Harrison Mills.

October 11, 2008.

We left Dewdney about noon and headed up the Norish Creek road (travel east on Hawkins Pickle and you can't miss the FSR). The gate at 10 km was locked but there was adequate room under the gate to bulldog the bikes through. We crossed the power line and continued north toward Dickson Lake. The road forks just below the lake but you only have one choice as the lake is well gated. The right fork climbs along the east ridge above the lake and there are a few loose, rocky climbs but manageable on a DR650 with dual sport tires. The road has been decommissioned so there are lots of cross ditches and a couple of creek crossings but everything was rideable due to the dry conditions.

Once past the lake you carry on down Statlu Creek until you join up with the Chehalis/Statlu CreekFSR. This road is not maintained at this end and there are plenty of small cross ditches and one must keep an eye open for the occasional sink hole which could swallow a wheel at low speed.

Most of the bridges are good other that the bridge near Marguerite Creek which has fallen into disrepair and you could almost fall through in a few places.

At the junction of Chehalis FRS and the Chehalis/Statlu Road we turned north towards Chehalis Lake and did some exploring. Immediately after the bridge crossing the Chehalis we tried to make our way to Hemlock Valley.

We made our way up the back of Mount Davies but ran into a good size windfall. It is a challenging climb and we were running out of daylight and gas so time to turn around and head towards Harrison Mills. The ride back down was probably tougher than the ride up but soon we were on the mainline and able to pick up top gear.

The Norish Creek, Dickson Lake, Statlu Creek loop makes a pleasant day ride with lots of time for a breakfastin Dewdneyor a beverage after at the Sasquatch Inn. Just keep in mind that you will have to bulldog your bike under the gate so it is great to have a friend or friends along for the ride.
