For what it is worth...Walmart had the best prices on Megellans when I bought mine. I have had it two years, no problems

Any recommendations out there? I'm hoping Santa brings me a GPS for christmas (probably in the mid to lower price range). Any specific models or features to look for? Any to definitely avoid?

I have a Megallan Meridian Gold. I have had it for 2 years . Very durable, waterproof, I thought that it was great........until I saw 640 in 604's. That GPS is sweet. I think it is a Garmin.
No matter what you get, the first thing you have to do is , hardwire it to your bike battery. If you run it off of Double A's the vibration of the bike makes the batteries losetheir connection. I realize the vibration factor is a little more with a KTM, but I still think it is a good idea.
My 2 cents

Crossing over the pass on the way to Bella Coola this August, after 12 hours of riding....and only a couple hours until Bella Coola!

I use a Garmin Rino 130. It works well. Has a bread crumb feature with track back. Has an FRS radio and is capable of downloading GMRS radio as well. Check it out!

Now I see they have one better. It has a color screen and some other good features.

If another member has one as well, the first time you radio each other you show up on the screen. You can then locate your riding friend and make your way there.
Too cool. Highly recommended

I like the 2-way raido deal. But you need to buy one and talk ur buddy into getting one also! It's too bad they arent all like that yet. Maybe I should hold off for a few years............NOT!
What is "GMRS" radio?
Only 10 guys out of like 200 on DSBC have a GPS !!!
Maybe I should have re-phrased that poll...... "Who would partisipate is a B.C. wide GPS Poker run"

A BC wide GPS run would be a hoot. I have a Garmin 276C on my KLR and it works great. Lets me explore lots of roads and trails I wouldn't normally find.
If you decide to go ahead with the GPS run I would be happy to help you put it together.

Hi Paul,
I am thinking about getting a 276C. :DHow do you like it? Does it do everything you wanted it to? What kind of datacard have you got in it? Does it work well in forested regions? What about the mapping software, is it any good? Anything you don't like about it? Where did you get it?
Thank you in advance,
Hawk

How do you like it? Does it do everything you wanted it to? Love it, yep it does it all!
What kind of datacard have you got in it? 128Mb (and the local marine charts card)
Does it work well in forested regions? It has the same limitations of all GPS's -heavy tree cover, or steep canyons can block satellite reception.
What about the mapping software, is it any good? I find the Garmin Mapsource "Topos Canada" to be quite good.
Anything you don't like about it? It's expensive. Also at first I thought that it was real heavy until I started using w/o the rechargeable battery. Now its light!
Where did you get it? I bought it privately from a guy who bought it for his boat, then boat a new boat with integrated chartplotter/radar unit.
Thank you in advance, You're welcome, -Paul.

Yes, I have a GPS
I bought Garmin GPSMAP 76CS. Good resolution, colour, good memory, fairly fast etc. The screen is quite readable outside even better in full sun. Some shadows or sun in my eyes make it hard to see.
Works well as a handheld for hiking (and just in case I ever have to walk out)and I use it for kayak as well....waterproof and it floats....but since I didn't believe all the advertising I also bought a "Aquapak"...waterproof bag for it as well.. For the bike (650gs) I bought a Touratech mount. I can and intend to wire it in for power one of these days but batteries last quite well if the screen backlighting is not left on all the time.
The internal antenna works well but I also bought an external antenna which gets better reception in heavily wooded areas/valleys etc. I haven't permanently mounted the antenna on the bike yet.
I purchased over the web from GPSCentral.ca (located in Calgary)....great service, fast, professional etc, good price, no prov sales tax.
For data I use the standard city mapsets but for the bush I use Topo Canada which has contours, logging roads, some trails etc. Not totally up to date but not bad. It has enough memory to keep both mapsets in the m,achine at the same time as long as I don't try to include too much of the province.
Beside navigation and providing me with a fairly detailed map of the area I like to download my "tracks" after the trip so I can see better exactly where I went! Not that I would admit to ever being "lost temporarily".

Joker...what ideas do you have for your bc wide GPS poker run.
would you get your co-ordinates for the next checkpoint at every checkpoint, or would you be given all the co-odinates for all the check points at the beginning. (in case you got so lost you could always skip a checkpoint and proceed to the next checkpoint.)
Would you really make it BC wide:shock: or maybe a Kelowna/Kamloops area with an open invitation to all bc riders.
1day event or a 3 day weekend event?
Would the checkpoint be "manned" or just a pickup station where you pick up a sealed envelope with your card and any information you might need.
We should get together over the winter (Bike Show) with our "computer geek, 640 in 604" and discuss the "Trifecta GPS Poker Run":hb: :cf2:

hello gps'ers
i have a garmin GPSmap60 which has treated me well although about 2 weeks after its one-year birthday the screen malfunctioned and was difficult to read. i tried calling garmin warranties but couldn't get through for days until finally i did and they told me to call the canadian place in quebec. so they said "send it in, mon ami"and shortly afterwardsthey sent me back another refurbished unit in its place and gave me no hassles about being over the one year warranty. there you go.
ps. get the topo canada set, it makes a huge difference. the auto routing stuff is really cool too.

yes I have a Garmin E-Tracks mounted to my bar. However it goes off when the batteries rattle around. Need to get a better direct wire unit.

Hey rusty! How do you find the canada topo maps? Is it up to date? Are all the trails in there? When you ride, does the gps unit tell you that you are swimming in a lake when you are actually close but not next to it?
I just got the BC backroads maps on disk and demo'ing some software. But they just stitched the local maps together without making sure it's seemless. The vanc Island maps are seemles. So at the borders between the BC small maps, they conflict, or there is gaps. I'm sure they are working in this as the island maps are seemless.
ANyway, trying to keep my options going. I was going to get the garmin 60 with topo canada but they couldn't prove to me that it had all the trail info. And I didn't want to gamble.

The battery thing is a common issue. There are power cables for those units I believe, what model?
