Just anticipating\hoping for, a really early spring thaw.
We know better than to schedule anything yet, just want to be ready.
I do hope that we can maybe get a couple of tech days in before the thaw.

A few rides that for sure are on the agenda, Kitsault again hopefully with Dr Bikes Ural as a support vehicle, Telkwa pass with Ural. Hmm! But anywhere as a group is fun!

A cabin excursion or many might be in order. If I don't land a decent job in the meantime I may be tinkering around the Lake for a few months, explore the area so to speak. Alaska and beyond is calling also. I'd do QCI or Haida Gwai (spelling?), but if I'm on budget I'd probably chose to forfeit the ferry expense in exchange for tank refills and wander elsewhere. Perhaps the Bella Coola ride I didn't make.

As for a tech day, I have DoThingy, a valve check and new spockets and chain that are a must. Might mod a bit, but basically a full lube job and a decent once over is in order.

For now Happy Holidays To All.:hb:

Pick a date and I should be able to make it.
I am going to Inuvik this year for the summer solstice.
A trip to Telegraph Creek too.

Sparklr: The bike is in a zillion pieces right now ...if you want a laugh! (valves, swingarm etc..) Might be out on Saturday (...pulling another bike to bits) but off work &around all next week. Remember if you need the Doo tools - I got them and spare gaskets ...just in case.

I will be in Terrace at the end of April and would be game for a ride somewhere. There will most likely still be snow here at that time of year.

How long does it take to go from Terrace to Kitsault anyways? I have always wanted to check out that place.

Proudman
12-19-2009, 01:38 PM
By the end of April there will be enough dry patches that some of us will be on the road.
Kitsault was a full days ride, with breaks and an extended visit to the emergency ward.

bchunter
12-19-2009, 06:55 PM
The full day would be fun, the emergency visit would not be to pleasant. I hope everything is OK.

I will post up the dates that I will be in Terrace. Even a ride after work would be nice. If there is a longer ride around that time, I can always stay an extra day to partake.

If a Telkwa pass ride ever happens, I would be into that. I have another friend that would be interested as well.

The Telkwa Pass ride is awesome.
With the best of intentions I had promoted an annual Telkwa Pass ride but I found that Mother Nature does not always cooperate with our plans.
Crap happens and I never got to ride through the pass last year but I am hoping, big time, that I will be doing it again this year.

I have been in the Telkwa pass from this side a couple of times on quads, but never all the way through. We have turned around just after going through the boulders and started the decent on the gas line. It is awesome now that they put a bridge over Pine Creek. Some people enjoy crossing the creek. On a quad, I never minded but don't think I want to, or am good enough to on my bike.

Like I said, if it gets planned this year I will try to make, work and family life depending. It would be nice to do it with fellow DSers.

Thanks.

I guess I will do a bit of an intro as well, since you guys know each other and I am kind of a lurker but want to start riding with some DS folks.

My name is Jim, I am 32 and have 2 kids. I have a 1979 Suzuki TS 250 and a 1996 DR650. I rode a bit when I was 14 or so, and never rode again until last year when I picked up the TS. I rode quite a bit last year on the TS, I got it plated and really enjoyed riding both the road and the dirt. Now with the DR, I am looking forward to riding some longer rides, when I have the time. I have ridden sleds and quads for lots of years and have spent the past couple of years investing my $$ into lifting and modding trucks, but then I realised how cheap it was to mod a bike, and how much fun I have on them, and that is that. I really enjoy riding.

I would be up for any trips that get planned, as long as I can work it around my home life and work life, which I am sure is the same for everyone. Day trips would work best for me, but if there is an overnight planned, if I know far enough ahead, you never know, I might be good to go.

Kitsult would be one place I would love to see.

Anyways, I love adventures, hence the reason I got the DR and want to meet some DS folk.

Thanks.

Jim

Jim,

This last year was good to get to know several riders in the Terrace/Kitimat area. I can't speak for everyone but we're generally a mixed(-up) bunch with various skill levels and daring...& ages - so don't worry about that; I've turned back on some trails more than once! I seem to have a "deep" affection for potholes & rocks -target fixation!. Others can't keep out the mud & bogs and some appear to have an aversion to staying on the trail (or their bike). Best thing last year was to put some knobbies on the KLR for the trails. Most of the time we're just messing around in the Terrace area. Some of us also like the road-runs mixed with FSR's (Kitsault is a great example of this). Last summer I spent a few days camping & wandering around the back roads of Houston/Ootsa Lake/Burns lake area.

Yes, it's difficult to get everyone together (often 3-5 bikes, but total, we're about 7-8 bikes)but most weekends & some evenings there's someone going out. You can usually post here and ask or PM individuals

If you know any potential rides between here & Smithers - please share them. I know Red Rose Mine was "scouted" earlier this year - but reported as unsafe.

Stay in touch & hopefully we'll see you next year!

bchunter
12-24-2009, 05:38 AM
I would say that I am a medium rider. This year I went up the Microwave with only one bail, which was a lesson in going downhill and speed. I have been riding the Suswa, Pine Creek area, and the trails behind Telkwa on my 1979. I have been riding between Smithers and Telkwa a bit and around Hazelton on the old TS. This is where I got the love for the highway. I have sledded for years with some very good sledders and I think this is where I have learned most of my biking balanece, since it is very close.

The Red Rose trail is a tough trail. I have done it on quad and sled, but never on a bike. I would do the Comeau trail, the one on the front of the mountain on a bike, but it is a pretty short run.

There are lots of fun places up the Kispiox, with the possiblity of a loop through the Mitten to Hwy 37 if the slide is passable on bike. I have not seen it but know a truck can not make it through. It would make for some good fishing too.

I am looking forward to riding the DR. It will be a huge change from the TS.

When I come to Terrace for anything, I will post up, even to just grab a coffee and meet.

Thanks.

Jim

I am more or less mended, and ready and willing. I also have a new bike to play with. Its a Ural, keeping the KLR for now. I am not sure what the Ural will do and at what speed, but dam it looks like I could haul the kitchen sink and then some.

I was thinking of taking the Lawson to Houston one day this spring / summer, play my way out, stop for gas, grab a coffee and pie at PV, and rip home. If so, I will post up and maybe can meet for a coffee.

A fun trip would be the Parrots Lake loop down onto Francois Lake Rd, then home through Houston. I made it from the Francois Lake side into Parrots Lakes by sled year back, and I remember it to be mostly logging road with one little stream crossing. In that neck of the woods the possibilities are endless.

With the DR, I want to get as much on/off road in a day as possible. I might have to be buying a Corbin seat :)

drbike
12-29-2009, 08:55 AM
Your right, one of the good things living around here is the availability of back road loops to ride. If your coming through town on a ride give me ringle dingle and Imay just join you for pie and some dust.

Well the time has come, I've decided that the worst of winter has passed and have had enough of reading the Southerners' ride reports and oogling ride pics. There have been many decent riding days since January that weren't taken advantage of. The weather looks mild and sunny for the weekend of Feb 19-21, so I am going to slap a plate on and go play wherever while I wait for my parts to arrive. Anyone else had enough of scratching the itch?

Dorothy plated her bike last week.
On the down side, the new battery she bought last fall, and never used, is TOAST! :mad3:
New one should be in this week some time.

drbike
02-08-2010, 11:48 AM
how can a new battery be dead so soon. I think we should all go out and buy those little del-tran battery tenders.

So when are we going to meet for coffee, the tear-ass meeting the Houston/Smithers group. A road ride perhaps, I only have the Ural plated so we have to go slow or wait. Who ever thought that a KLR was fast?

With all the retired, tired, and un-employed up here we might have to come up with a new name, N X NW, might stand for the Nasty No Work or Nice No Work rather than North North West

Sounds likemost made it through Winter, (:mb:Mr WB will be missed:mb:).

She had the battery on a trickle charger until about a month ago, then put it on the bike on Saturday.

She also had a problem with her ATV battery.

That's three premature batterydeaths for her.

I think that it's her magnetic personality :D.

02-08-2010, 11:58 AM
It might be that you are too close to Kitamat I hear those guys suck a lot of BC power to sell to others

Seems kind of strange, might want to check into your trickle charger, sometimes you can over doo (KLR content)a good thing.

Could be her magnetic personality

"I think we should all go out and buy those little del-tran battery tenders."

OMG, I just went and purchased said unit this morning. Proud, did anyone ever check the battery level?

"It might be that you are too close to Kitimat I hear those guys suck a lot of BC power to sell to others." Ouch! I hear we make it for you to enjoy running all your toys!
Some :mad3:opposing force is determined to ruin my riding! It seems that I may still be employed on the proposed weekend of Festivus! Worst case, I can squeeze a jaunt on the 26th. More than likely some excursions will happen on days off prior to that. Anyone for weekday action? If this employment fiasco maintains its' course I work weekends til Mid March.

I am not too sure of my schedule yet, I might be there before the Friday, but will be there on Friday for sure. I am thinking if it is just the Friday, and weather is good, I will leave here in the AM and ride the Terrace neck of woods all day. I have a social function in the evening.

Kitimat KLR

What is is with your batteries? ...mine seem to last forever (...perhaps I shouldn't tempt fate). Even the "past bikes" I think I only ever bought one replacement and that was for 1978 Honda C70 that I used in winter.

I take it off the bike - top up the levels - and give it few "trickle charges" every few weeks for a couple of hours ....seems to work. I bought this bike/battery in 2006 and it still seems fine!

As for getting plates on - guys, be real, it WILL snow again ....maybe

Likely be insuring the DR in April and my work schedule has been a bit easier to work around this year so I'm definitely in for some rides in a couple months. The Telkwa Pass is a great one. It clocked out almost identical in time to riding the highway to Terrace when I did it last year. Nice scenery in there too! Definitely a late season ride with all the melt-water that goes through there but but well worth it.

Awaiting the response from DrBike as to whether or not he is coming and more importantly if he will ride his Ural up the Kispiox before I make the decision on where to go. If the Dr. plans to join and navigate the Kispiox, then that is the destination and breakfast could be at Kitwanga or even Hazelton if someone knows of a good eats place there. If the Dr. is out, then I'd like to peek around the Terrace FSR's, and New Aiyansh is good for me also, Kincolith?. Another option is lunch in Rupert and check a few spots on the way.

"Ya, don't worry about me. I got social calendared up." Jim, social calendars are for rainy days!:Stir

"I'llopen bidding with 10am Terrace A&W ?" OMG Beautiful, I'll fall asleep again by then. One didn't need heated grips several weeks ago, and the only thing slippery and greasy is breakfast. I'm rolling at 8 for wherever. If we stay this side of Terrace I'll meet you at the Dub at 10.

Oops this would be tomorrow.

Sure, not sure about pushing, if the snow is hard I can go if not, we can walk, 80Km, not sure.

sparklr
03-19-2010, 06:50 PM
I didn't mean "literally" pushing :spl: . bchunter reported that we can travel up to the 80 km mark with no issues.

"I have a parcel I want to drop off somewhere around Kitwanga." :D Somewhere around? Ok, you'll have to tell me if you want to hit Kitwanga first or somewhere around and we can go from there.

The road is snow free to 80+ km. I turned around at 79 or so and I could have gone on a lot further then that. But don't expect to take the Mitten yet, it is still snowed in.

Iron butt its not but I did a tad less than 500 klicks, a little cold on the way out and little cold on the way home, but a nice ride all in all. Just to show I can get lost anywhere, I was going in circles in Kitwanga:X, big help the GPS is, it confirmed I was going in circles and was of little help in finding where I needed to go.

A quick stop to buy a battery, leave it there, and venture on. The roads so far were not a problem, no grip heaters needed yet, however I could of used an ice scraper to clear the visor a few times. 2 hours in, the toes were frozen, the grip heaters finally received ignition just before the construction delay. The rest was just some chill. Was going to stop for breakfast @ Kitwanga, but reconsidered as thawing potential frostbite can be painful. Chatted up all the locals at the Haze Chevron, sukking back Java like there was no tomorrow, and defrosted the toes! Finally I see the Ural (Dr. Bike with Lil' Jo) descending the hill of much Police Activity, then Kitty arrives just as frozen as the rest of us. A little banter and a quick lunch is devoured.

So off we go. The pics are limited to encourage others to see it for themselves and to NOT spoil the Aug Telkwa Pass Ride! Lil' Jo was Chief Cinematographer, and we hope to see some of that footage.

"two wheel, one wheel drive guys" I like it!

Well I did manage to get out for a few hours this afternoon. It was a good warm-up for the fun to follow in the coming weeks. I decided to head out on theWest Kalum FSR, until I hit the white stuff.

All clear up to the left fork for Sleeping Beauty mnt. Left was clear and showed lots of signs of logging activity. I managed to go approx 8 km's and had a lot of fun in slick and slimy mud. Learning to balance the KLR again after a year where I just rode the KLX. No problems and I remained upright, which is always a good sign.

I then returned to the main FSR and headed for Pine Lake,. The snow is melting fast and for several km's I made good progress riding in vehicle tracks. I turned around at about the same point that the NXNW crew turned back last year. The only difference being that it was most likely the end of April or later when we tried it:tup:

I explored some of the many trails in that area, before heading back to the highway and a trip up Shames mnt.

Camera battery flat = 2pic's.

Yes - a good days ride, even if it was a "little cold" to say the least.I clocked ~512kms. Good to see drbike out & about (& he wasn't that slow really - only in the corners) & I think I heard him muttering something about the Ural & Telkwa Pass.

I'm "tyred" of everyone else so I put an order with JCWhitney for some TKC80's Fr & Rr ...I'll let you know how it plays out...

You will love the TKC, good rubber, not really long lasting but easy to change and sticky on most everything. My plan for the KLR, (you know the oneI am trying to trade for a wife!:)) was to use the TKC for the front and a longer lasting rear sort of like a Mefo or some sort of harder rubber thinking it would be the best of both worlds.

Make sure you let us know what the finished price of the TKC are once they are on the bike.

You did great at over 500 km, but with a bit of math it seems like you had 1000 km of tire rotation give or take a little I had 1500, cause I got three, ha ha ha!:D Given that it is pretty obvious I had at least a 1/3 more fun.

It only looks warm, started out at minus 6, on the C scale.

It was sort of neat how the weather greatly improved as we went west from the cold and ice in Houston to the spring like condidtions in Hazelton.

http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/856/497March202010ride_005-med.jpg (http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/showphoto.php?photo=18624&size=big&sort=1&cat=856)

After riding up the Kispiox road a few klicks we came upon a hard working road crew cleaning the bridges, seemed like a good spot for a breather, or whatever those smoking types do.

It was really nice an warm by the time the afternoon came, made for spring like riding for sure, I noticed the kid in the hack even took off her face cover.

There is a great bridge going into the other Hazelton. Everyone should ride over this bridge, I never tire of it. This is really a nice part of the country to ride anytime of the year loads to see, and lots to ride.

http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/856/497March202010ride_022-med.jpg (http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/showphoto.php?photo=18625&size=big&sort=1&cat=856)

The ride home with a side trip, to Kitwanga was uneventful, other than the fact I found out there are at least three distinct streets in Kitwanga called Kitwanga road, go figure big town of Kitwanga can't come up with new unique names for their many streets. One other thing that was discovered on the way home was that the Ural has a dark for a light, they do weird things in Russia. I am thinking next time a couple of Led Flashlights taped onto the Jugs of the lady might be the Ivan thing to do.

OK As you all know, if you follow closely I did my annual cleanon Sunday, no sense in going crazy about this clean thing, a few hours a year is lots I figure.

Came across a map book and noticed what looks like a loop, if you

Follow the Suskwa road, past Dennison you come to what looks like a connector the 455 or Nichyeskwa Road, coming out just north of Fort Babine then your can go to Smithers, Telkwa or Granisile depending. Does anyone know if this is a real road?

Google earth seems to suggest it there but whether its open or not?

bchunter
03-23-2010, 07:08 PM
It is a loop, with some history I guess. About 5 yrs ago they punched the little remaining part from the 55 rd on the Niklitkwa to the Suskwa. Then they gated it, and now they have deactivated it. The deactivation is worth to stop a truck, but I am not sure if will stop a quad or a bike. I am pretty sure I would be able to get a bike though it, but this is on my list of To Do's this year to check out with the bike.

Sounds like a Saturday or Sunday trip at the end of April ???????

This weekend looks like a total washout ...but that won't stop me (us?) I'm sure (rain, snow & 5C). I'm off Fri/Sat/Sun so should get out - Fri/Sat look the least worst.

Might run through to Terrace then up to Aiyansh if weather is tolerable and snoop around Cranberry to see what its like. Mika - where were those Hotsprings? ...might need them to thaw out:spl:

As for ridin'in theBurns Lake - Ootsa area, I love it ...& still lots more to explore between Houston & Vanderhoof. I wandered up Old Babine Lk Rd from Smithers in futile attempt to go to Granisle - but turned back when I nearly got killed by the trucks that were grading the roads up there.

When does the cabin open at Fraser Lake? I've got a few days off just after mid-April (too soon?)

sparklr
03-25-2010, 09:33 AM
I might be up for some action Sunday, really doesn't matter weather wise as it looks like WET is the motto all weekend.

The hotsprings are probably not worth the trouble right now as it is wet and trail maybe snowed over. A 40 minute hike is required from the trail head. That would warm you up though!

The cabin is always ready. Last week in April was when we had the Meet 'N' Greet last year. A little chilly riding out, not unbearable though, more windy than anything else. One of the main FSR's was CRASHable last year. The next few weeks it seems to be promising snow in the area, but it is really warming up. I'll be going through and stopping there next weekend and I'll get a feel for the situation. But a Meet 'N' Greet might also be in order then. 2Trider will be here by then, have enough time to settle into Northern BC.

Now Sunday is a different proposition...... I am game for anything but skinny-dipping with the naked Fin:shoot: I do however have first hand experience of how to locate the hotspring closest to the road. It is only 5 minutes walk after you climb up the bank using the ropes.

How about a run to Kitsault? My understanding is that the roadmay be plowed and clearas work is underway at this time. Mica, Steve are you interested? Any better ideas for rides we can do fully clothed? :bliss:

I tried establishing contact with the guys up there, no luck but I did get busy signals indicating someone is possibly there. I managed to get some info regarding Kitsault, however I won't be able to get much for answers and details until I make contact with the manager tomorrow evening when he returns. At that time I will also inquire about the original notion of have it as a stop for the Sacred Circle Dualsport Tour.

The person I spoke with believes the crew is still boating in, leaving me to believe that the FSR is still snowbound and the Pass portion definitely is not clear. Better to wait until the Cranberry is open and try to do the loop through the Kispiox to Hazelton on the same day, a warmer and drier day, and deal with Kitsault later.

I'm more inclined for Rupert for a wet/cool ride as we can park it to warm up and have a hot lunch by the ocean. Thoughts?

Well, not really, just hijacking it a little to the East. Anyone want to do afternoon coffee in Smithers tomorrow? I should be good to go between 1:00 and 3:00 tomorrow pm.

Man are the bikes coming out thick now - Harleys, crotch rockets, DS's, trikes - must be that time of the year :bliss:

Let us know how you make out on the Kitsault line for the Telkwa Pass tour sparklr. I still think that this would be the cats butt for the second night, and cut down some road time for day 2 so we can play in the dirt a little more. Thanks.

The ride today was certainly promising to be wet, if not chilly, or both. During the night I awoke to a howling wind and plummeting rain. Set the alarm to alternate beacon mode, dosed off again and was irritated by the second announcement of my laziness. Java was the first order of the day, second (hold your breath, a diaper intervention, o' come on not mine), then slap the missing pieces back onto the Pig. Check all my messages/forums to see if anyone has bailed out yet! Nope, rain or shine as promised. For a change I managed to be late out of the gate, Kitty rang the bell and I still wasn't ready. Gassed up and ran an errand, and off we went. Kitimats' Pig had no functional headlight, which he bypassed breakfast to remedy, damn little ancient fuses. Fill up yet another Pig and off we went.

I wondered to myself how this trip would be for me today, just having done the same route weeks ago on a colder but sunnier day. I've been swayed lately as I've been reading Epic RR's of other peoples adventures, the places they've been and the amazing photographs they have taken. Knowing nothing about photography, even with all the cameras I have compiled, I opt to just stick with the cellphone since the weather isn't going to cooperate anyhow.

Charge! Off we go, the first thing noteworthy I see is 3 eagles perched upon a desolate stump in the Skeena River, indicating that some damn fine food is in them waters. As my head does the Exorcist 360, I ponder the obligatory cellphone shot. Hmm, that really wouldn't do any justice for such a sight, instead I fix my eyes back to the road they are supposed to be glued upon, and contemplate getting that shot on the return leg if at all possible.

Up the Exstew we go, a little side detour suggest by Kermode. Kitimat already went once but it was somewhat wetter then.

Here we are about 2 Km from as far as we can go before snow, reported from someone returning with truck and sled. Seems wherever you go lately, you can be almost certain to run into someone else.

The guys were faster than I thought, so this time I got my adrenaline flowing and lit her up so to speak. Apparently missed a photo op of some cormorants, nonetheless nature called in another manner and allowed for redemption on some missed action shots.

Back from Exstew, ready to hit the highway again.

The rain becomes a fearsome foe now until Rupert. So we just trod along enduring the seasonal Liquid Sunshine. The rail line on route is a hub of activity, and seems only two take notice of us 3 idiots riding the monsoon, accompanied by sympathetic waves of jealousy. No doubt, bikers. The rest just think we are idiots.

We saunter into Rupert and stop for lunch at Cowpuccino's. A well needed warm up and enjoy the "Beauty" and charm of the place. Stomach's are fueled, quick gas up and head back home time, with one or two detours. More rain, on and off as was the motto of the day.

Rest stop, pit stop and planning.

Next stop was to investigate Kasiks, an interesting and promising FSR by the accounts of all the maps I scoured. Lesson learned, don't rely on these for trip planning, if you do be prepared for an alternate plan of attack. We didn't get far, it was greasier than:mad3: (you fill in the rest)!

../photogallery/data/856/364March_28_Rupert_009_Edit-med.JPG (../photogallery/showphoto.php?photo=18766&size=big&sort=1&cat=500)

Kitimat was wiser and didn't bother, Kermode also found this to be as much fun as I did, having opted for the KLR instead of the KLX. Enough of the puddles and grease. There definitely is something to see along the way, but at this time of day and condition, the Pot 'O' Gold will have to wait for drier days. I must add that was one of my most strenuous trail U-turns to date, actually breathing heavy and formed a bead of sweat.

../photogallery/data/856/364March_28_Rupert_010-med.jpg (../photogallery/showphoto.php?photo=18730&size=big&sort=1&cat=500)

Back to the highway and head homeward. Frikkin rain! The bonus is I had the opportunity to run my gear in the extremes to learn what I was lacking or needed improvement to make it more enjoyable. No Grip heaters today, but the toes needed some help all day.

Today I learned some valuable lessons and perhaps in our daily rush these are things we often take for granted. The road traveled is never the same twice. The camera versions of our journeys compiled with any medium or media format can never be replaced by actually enacting it and retaining these moments in our minds. I can't count how many times I forgot that I was on two wheels and let my eyes wander. No I didn't stop to capture the eagles on the way home, they were there and the vision is firmly implanted. To document the whole wet expedition, or even a dry version would almost certainly ruin it for others. That highway is majestic in every way, and definitely needs to be seen with the mountains adourned with snow to appreciate its grandeur.

Kitimat and I part ways with Kermode in Terrace. On the way home we detour at Lakelse Lake as my ears hurt from the pressure of my helmet. Take in the calmness and serenity of the lake and break for home. Warm up the toes for a while and contemplate the day. Good ride all things considered with great companions. Mostly highway, but clearly evident that it really doesn't matter whether the surface was tarred or not!

Well you know I am kind of laughing in my decaf here, thinking I am not really sure its the kids camera and shot at a weird low down angle from the side car and and and who knows, to be honest the picture showed up at the end of the post and I am not really sure how it got there or where it is, but I do think it is near Telkwa, at the cattle crossing and the bypass to the crossing, next time I head to the west I will see and confirm if IJim isright.

Now that will be a test for the young buck on the white rig fueled by Timmie. Do a nice long ride and post the photos out of order and let him tell us where they are, I think we have a contest in the works. Maybe the winner can have an extra pancookie thingie or some such prize.

Bring it on !!!!!!!!!!! I will step up to that any time. Post away. I think that 2Trider should keep talley as he will be supplying the prize :br:

As for your last photo, it is facing South, 5 clicks from Telkwa on the Lawson FSR, approx 150 meters after crossing Helps Creek, the Bulkely River on your left, which is river left of the Bulkely since the river is flowing in the other direction, you will cross the cattle guard, or be able to go around it in approx 150 meters in your photo, there is a road off to the right that accesses a gas line that is fenced off and on private land, or with permission you can access the gas line and subsequently a the power line that follows the Telkwa Pass to the West, approx 400 meters along the road you can turn left into the farmers driveway (who's name is Eugene in case you were wondering), continue about 1 click further and you will over look the Bulkley River and the CN tracks and a nice sliding hill in the winter and a one track that is in development by some local Telkwa folk.

If I am wrong, I will buy the Timmies :dr:

So, how was your guys weekend?

I was lucky to have a great one. It started yesterday when I could get away for a hour to try out the DR in the gross stuff. I rode through pine flats, quad trails covered with snow, mud, and ice, and through some pretty gross places. All I can say is that I give the DR a A+ from my perspective. It was totally awesome to ride the DR though stuff like that. What a confidence builder. The front end wanted to wash out numerous times but I could keep it under control. The bike responds great. The doc did kiss a tree while I was trying to go through a motor deep puddle. On exiting the puddle the bike decided to choose a line that shot me prematurely out of the puddle into an apsen. I ended up bending the right turning light, but that was all. No problem :dr:

My great weekend continued today when I was able to go for a ride with drbike. I left the house to rendezvous with the Ural on the Lawson FSR. Of course, I has to stop for a photo opportunity.

http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/856/485Lawson_Road_copy.jpg

This was the only pic that I took since we had a photographer riding sidecar in the Ural. I will leave the other pics for them to post. Today was the most that I have ridden the DR, a grand total of 90 clicks. We did some loop roads through the agricultural areas of the Bulkley Valley. We had a great day for riding and also saw our first black bear. Well, I saw it in the camera viewfinder as I did not take the time to stop and look at what everyone else was looking at. What can I say, I was there to ride. Our ride ended with a bevey at the Telkwa One Stop, where we parted ways.

By the end of the ride, I did not want to go home. I just wanted to keep riding. I am really looking forward to getting a full day of riding in.

I hope your guys weekend was fun as well

Sounds great! I was very lucky today. Friends went out quadding to Red Sands and offered for me to tag along. I rode a borrowed KLX250. It was really good to get out and practice up again. You will have no problems hitting potholes after the Kalum gas bar. Heck, I would venture that it is a harder task to avoid them and find some half decent flat spot then to hit them. And man are they deep. I cursed more times in 2 km's then I have in a long time.

Well, today was a great day. I was lucky enough to hook up with 2Trider after his fresh arrival in the NW. The plan of the day, meet in New Town at 10:00 and head down the Kitwanga Back Road. After meeting, greeting, and gasing up the Doc, we headed out.

I think this would be a good place to put the fact that I was GREATLY outclassed in riding skills by 2Trider. I realized this right at the beginning. After pulling off the tarmac and heading up the Kitwanga Back Road, I stopped and informed him that I have 2 kids and a job and I am not really up to killing myself doing anything really dumb or fast (well, I thought I would say what I was thinking at THAT moment in time). He was great and understood my thoughts. That made me happy. So we continued on the Kitwanga Back Road. At the first spot to drop to the Skeena River we pulled off the road and headed down to the shore for our first photo op.

http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/856/485IMG00161-20100412-1052.jpg

http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/856/485IMG00162-20100412-1102.jpg

This is when I learned to really like 2Trider's style. He took the photos on his blackberry and instantly posted them onto an Ontario forum. I liked that. :mb:

After yacking a bit we played around in the rock and sand, and I got a good lesson and some great riding tips in trying to control the DR. It was lots of fun, and the start of the confidence building process. After ripping it up for a bit we continued on to see what the slide looked like and see how passable it is. It turned out to be passable with no probs.

http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/856/485IMG00163-20100412-1129.jpg

http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/856/485IMG00164-20100412-1130.jpg

At this point I would like to interject a learning point that I made today. If you tell 2Trider that there is a "loop" around this, a "shortcut" through there, or "someone somewhere told me or wrote it on the bathroom wall" that a trail exists, he will want to find it. I mentioned that I had "heard" that there was a quad trail that went off a FSR that "apparently" went around the slide. So guess what, we just had to find it. So after the slide we went up the Burdoc FSR and found a quad trail taking off to the right back towards the slide. The trail was good, just overgrown. It was following 2Trider that I started to wonder what the hell I was doing following this expert on his nimble bike while I am ridding my 300+ pound piece of steel that I have ridden maybe a dozen times? :shoot:

Well, my adventurous spirit took over and I followed along and tested my skills and learned a ton with the DR as we crossed a beaver dam overflow and crossed a creek with a fairly steep muddy pitch after it. A couple of times we had to stop to break some vegetation out of our way:

http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/856/485IMG00165-20100412-1221.jpg

Once we finally hit the Kitwanga Back Road, and yes, the quad trail did go around the slide, we headed off to Kitwanga to fuel our bikes and our bellies. By this point I was really starting to love the Doc. Sure it is big, but it thumps. 2Trider referred to it as a tractor and that got me thinking, maybe I should paint it green and yellow and call it the John DR :hf:

Just before we hit Kitwanga, 2Trider stopped for another photo op:

http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/856/485IMG00166-20100412-1301.jpg

It made me feel proud to hear 2Trider talk about the beauty of the area. I love this area and all it has to offer and I love sharing it with others. Just before this photo op we passed a good sized black bear that ran in front of us. The NW is a special place, that is for sure.

After we had a great lunch and fuelled the bike up in Kitwanga, I asked if it was OK to take the slab back as, get this, I have not ridden more then 10 kms of solid slab before, it has all been dirt. 2Trider agreed and off we went, the DR thumping away. In Kitsegukla we took a small detour to the mouth of the Kitsegukla River, then headed down the old highway, the Skeena Crossing Road. We took another side loop that dropped us down to the Skeena River and followed an old dirt road. It was not very long, but it was very fun.

http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/856/485IMG00168-20100412-1448.jpg

http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/856/485IMG00169-20100412-1454.jpg

Once we got back to the hwy, I was beat, both physically and mentally. This man tired the crap out of me. I informed my friend that I should get going and was going to just head back to New Town on the hwy. This was actually true as I did have to get home in time to get the kidlets bathed and to bed before I attended a scheduled evening meeting. Look deep into my eyes and you will see passion behind the fatigue:

http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/856/485IMG00167-20100412-1312.jpg

The way back to New Town was actually quite fun, especially the twisties by Seely Lake. With a wave, 2trider headed off to South Town and I continued on my way to load up the bike.

Like I said, I was lucky to do this ride today. Any time I get to ride is cherished. Riding in this area makes a guy realize that time is short and it goes by fast. Gotta make time for the good stuff, family, friends, and internal combustion engines :hb:

Perfect day it was and Jim even managed to get the Dr past the beaver ponds....though one greasy uphill slowed him to a hault. Learning by doing/trying he was BRAVO

Another nice day so I thinks I will pack a lunch and tour up the Kispiox and stop in at one of the farms along the way and review some history if someone is there.

Anytime anyone wants to ride speak up. I want to explore

Bchunter, thanks for a great ride report. I am really looking forward to joining some rides with you and benefiting from your local knowledge.

Ride for this weekend is Saturday, with the usual rendezvous at A&W at 10 AM. I will leave at 8:00 to go scout some other areas on route for snow activity. The plan is to go everywhere possible in the Terrace area, ie Copper, Trapper, Whitebottom and Redsands in no particular order and time permitting. Looks like wet is the motto for the day as the Weatherman has generally been spot on for several years now.

Would be fun to have some of you Terrace and Rupert lurkers to come out and introduce yourselves.

Had a great ride today, starting with coffee and ending with one too! Good to get back on 2 wheels again. I don't have any pics to prove it but the weather today started offreally nice. Eventually, though,I had to take off my sunglasses - partly because of the clouds covering the sun, and partly because of the FSR dust on my visor! The Copper River FSR toward Telkwa Pass was clear and dry, but we ran into snow as we started to climb. As the day progressed, the clouds continued to do their thing and eventually it started to rain. Not too much to spoil the day, but enough to cool things down, so it was time for coffee again. No Redsands today - maybe next time.

I think sparklr and kitimatklr may have taken some photos so they'll have to post them.

Good to meet you, 2Trider. Thanks for putting up with us (the slower klr's).

Looking forward to more rides this year!

Sorry I couldn't get the RR out last night, I tried with all my might. Rode home in torrential rains and bellowing KLR surfing winds, parked the PIG and celebrated an exhausting day with a wobbly pop, hot shower and some nibbles. I finished transferring what little pics I did take, wrote the first line of the report and boom "lights out".

Started the day with my usual early start, no rain and I found some sun around the Upper Kitimat FSR. Decided that I have some time to kill, so might as well check out how far I can get before snow turns me back. To my surprise the road just kept going clear all the way. Then I hit the end for a wee break.

../photogallery/data/856/364April_17_2010_Ride_001-med.jpg (../photogallery/showphoto.php?photo=18918&size=big&sort=1&cat=500)

Looking back down the valley.

../photogallery/data/856/364April_17_2010_Ride_004-med.jpg (../photogallery/showphoto.php?photo=18920&size=big&sort=1&cat=500)

At this point I realized that I had better high tail it back to get to the 10 AM rendezvous as I really had no idea what time it was and I went farther than expected. On the way back I noticed the FS campsite was quite busy with more arriving.

Sorry I was a tad late, thankfully Chuck was later. A quick coffee, nibble and banter with 2Trider, Kitimat, Chuck and Proudman(who wasn't joining us today). Unfortunately Kermode couldn't make it either. Fueled up and headed off to the Copper River FSR.

The Copper was the usual fast and dusty run. Since I don't like dust I tried to maintain the lead, and this would give 2Trider KLR footage for his helmet cam. I'm glad he didn't take my advice and mount it rear facing. On route Baby Bear scurried back into hiding. Having anticipated rain, I only brought the cellphone for pics and figured that helmet cam would capture more frivolty than I could. The pace was fast, hopefully 2Trider still managed to enjoy the scenery. We stopped at the Pass fork for a break.

../photogallery/data/856/364April_17_2010_Ride_006-med.jpg (../photogallery/showphoto.php?photo=18921&size=big&sort=1&cat=500)

I was surprised that we made it this far. Snow started just around the corner. While 2T effortlessly scurried the snow pack with his DT like a rabbit I couldn't help but notice his technique and balance, obviously from years of experience. I knew that my approach would be less impressive and no way could I manage the route in the same fashion. My approach was more akin to navigating a Panzer, slow and steady, creating my own path to keep it upright. Time to turn around, damn! Upon further investigation, we were less than 10KM from the Pass.

Next we attempted Trapper. Caught a glimpse of Mama Bear scurrying into the bush and hit snow again. A little investigation turned us back about 3KM from the top. Still no rain yet, so we scurried back for fuel. Near the end of Copper I almost became the official front grill logo of Kenworth. Coming down a right hand corner to find the hauler on a bridge, full binders on and skid for the side. I could here the haulers' wheels lock on the bridge. Not too sure who was more freaked by this meeting.

Fueled up and hit Whitebottom to the end. The rain had started about halfway. At some point Kitimat and Chuck ditched us and let us fend for ourselves.

../photogallery/data/856/364April_17_2010_Ride_007-med.jpg (../photogallery/showphoto.php?photo=18917&size=big&sort=1&cat=500)

2T at the end.

../photogallery/data/856/364April_17_2010_Ride_008-med.jpg (../photogallery/showphoto.php?photo=18919&size=big&sort=1&cat=500)

The rain was starting to come down harder. 2T took the lead back with me in pursuit, trying to keep up. Hmm, I lost sight of him, now it's just me and the Bears! We parted ways back in Terrace, the downpour and winds picking up. I slogged back home with the heaters on, wondering where Kitimat went to. The Scorpion gear have finally passed the waterproof drowning test, heavy and soaked with water yet dry inside.

That was a terrific day of riding and my body affirms that! Perhaps not technical enough for 2T, but hopefully a glimpse of what the Northwest has to offer.

Can't wait to see some video!

Awesome pics and ride. I am glad you guys had a great day. And don't worry sparklr I have ditched two trucks due to oncoming logging truck action, one in the ditch going forward and one up a snowbank in reverse while being grill to grill with some serious pain.

For today I managed to squeak away while the kidlets were down to check out the Telkwa Pass from my side. The dirt road ended exactly where I thought it would, at the parking lot to the Microwave. There was at least 2 feet of packed snow still on the road from that point on. It will still be quite a while. I stopped at the campground at 8km to grab a couple of pics:

As we paused awaiting, we wondered the same thing. We went straight and followed Whitebottom along the Skeena. I could almost swear that this was the plan. Nevertheless, you would have turned back before the halfway point and may not have appreciated several moments on the way. I just can't understand how I got home before you.

 Yikes! Mea culpa I guess, I'm used to traffic on weekends on FSR's. I'm even more aware when I'm on an active logging road on weekdays as that is something I grew up with. I wasn't expecting a Big Hauler on a Saturday though! Nor was I expecting the pick-up hauling a** shortly afterward, assuming here that it was the supposed pilot vehicle, or a late call by the Hauler to get one out there! Hopefully the incident isn't an issue either way.

Almost forgot, I've heard of Microwave but have no clue to where it is. Before or after the Jonas FS campsite?

Nice pics BTW! I hope to get out for a ride with you soon!

Tomorrow, meet at the phone booth on the Suskwa at 10:00? I will trailer the bike there so I can head straight home after.

I have the gps coordiantes of the "possible" upper route that we can take to the Blunt and will put them into my GPS tonight. After scouring Google Earth, there may be a lower route as well that will take us out. I say we check out the lower route first as it is at the end of the road and if that fails, turn around and take the upper.

No can do for me! I have my last almost free dental appointment tomorrow. Aside from that I earned no ride credits today as I managed to get hold of the Kitsault manager this morning. That resulted in having to prepare another letter to state our intent and present a formal request. So far it was suggested that this year is out but perhaps something could be arranged for 2011. I was going to suggest a ride to test out the Kispiox route on the weekend. Breakfast at Kitwanga and go from there if anyone is interested. So far weather looks wet, but doesn't it always. Any takers?

Not sure about the weekend yet - I've got"other travel"coming up and most of next week is out of the question. I could have a couple of days later this week (Thurs/Fri) when I could get out (escape).

Just a heads up about the Mitten FSR (the Kispiox loop), it is still snowed in. I had a buddy try to go that way on Sunday and said that it was still snowed in. They went a ways but could not punch through.

Too bad you can't join us tomorrow sparklr. I am thinking that it is going to be good and muddy with some bushwacking thrown in. I am hoping that we can find a way through. We shall grab some pics and some video if we are lucky.

I am also thinking that maybe on Sunday we can have a meet and greet in Hazelton for a pancook breakfast with some of that liquid gold maple syrup if 2T still has some left :br: Fuel the bellies then a rip if possible? OMG guys, the plan was to follow Whitebottom along the Skeena to the end, not turn off up White Creek way. Electronic tracking not much good out there.

You must hone up on your DualSportTracker skills!:Stir

Just like ManTracker, you could have went to the first few corners of each direction. On one route you would have found the distinct impression of Kenda 270's under the weight of The Pig and rider. Obvious semi-controlled power slide trackings would have been evident on most corners with 2T's DT crash avoidance skids right beside it! I think 2T said he was laying tracks along the way, I thought maybe he was just trying to avoid the slower rider. You may have also sniffed upwind to capture the essence of my 10W40 oil or the delightful 2 Smoke in the air!

:mb:

As for the Fraser Lake Meet 'N' Greet dates, there are 2 preferred weekends in May, not accounting for weather at all. Avoiding Mother's Day and the Victoria Day weekends really leaves only May 1-2 and May 15-16. I'm thinking May is best to avoid summer holiday plans. Shoot me a PM or email with preference, and I will try to accommodate the weekend for our local regular group first as that was who more or less attended last year. Everyone out there is welcome of course. The plan again would be a Friday evening arrival, with exploration Sat and part of Sun, then head homeward.

OK, no Mitten-Kispiox. Pannukakku :br: and maple juice sounds pretty tempting though and I'm sure there is many other riding options there. I have a small dilemma, and it concerns the weather and the cabin. The wifi has been hinting that a Lake trip is in order and I need to get some work done around there anyway. The weather around here looks unfavourable, yet the Lake is summer like. Hmm, gloom and rain or balmy sunshine? I'll figure it out before the weekend. Since you guys will be checking Suskwa Phonebooths and Blunt, perhaps lookin' around Gookla might be an idea.

You got it ;) Read below .........

You should have been there. It was a great trip, well, I can say that now from the comfort of my couch :D

We started off with trying to find a through route on the "bottom" end of the Suskwa, basically trying to continue on with the old road as far as we could go. No sparklr, there was no phone booth antics. This is a "G" rated forum. :mb: We did not make it very far as it was really overgrown, but the trail is there. Who knows where it will go ????? 2T was mentioning taking his trials bike in there and I thought I could follow with a quad to carry the saws and brushing instruments, so a mental note for a future ride was made.

So it was back out to the main drag and on with Plan B. I logged some GPS coordinates into my GPS just incase we needed them, but that was for naught as it was pretty easy tracking.

http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/856/485Suskwa_1.JPG

We moseyed our way up the logging road and we come across a tree that is across it with a sign that says "No Motor Vehicle Access". No prob, a bike is not a motor vehicle now is it. They can go anywhere. So we continue on and start to hit some deactivations. At this point I will interject that I have never crossed a deactivation with a bike, so they looked down right DAUNTING. And they were. Come up to the top, look almost straight down, water either flowing or pooling in the bottom, then straight up the other side. And this went on, and on, and on, and on. I dumped the DR numerous times and stalled it out even more. I was working up a huge sweat. Again, the thought crossed my head, what the F*$# am I doing here following this skilled man????? But as my wife says, I am stubborn so on I plod. Up to the top, swallow stomach, down to bottom, cross the Red Sea, up the other side, stall out, dump bike, pick up bike, curse myself, start bike, try to extricate myself. And no, my boots are not waterproof.

Just when I was picking up my bike and thinking of hawking it down the bank and telling the insurance company that the Forest Fairies stole it and go and get myself some fancy light KTM, 2T comes to the rescue and says that the logging road is just around the corner. Wubba, Wubba, I can do this, so off I go. We hit the logging road, and head towards the Blunt FSR. We made it through to my surprise. I did not think that there was a through road, but here is proof. 2T on the Blunt FSR:

http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/856/485Suskwa_2.JPG

We make our way to Motown for lunch and snacks:

So now after a little relax (for me anyways) it is time to head back. There are two ways, the slab or the deactivations from hell. I give the choice to 2T after putting my two bits in (slab, slab, slab, slab) and he says the back road. Well, I guess I did need the practice in picking my DR up at the bottom of a deactivation. Before we head down the deactivated part I wanted to take a picture of the "No Vehicle" sign. When I looked at my photos at home I noticed I captured the elusive bush monkey on film:

http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/856/485Suskwa_5.JPG

So off we go, and guess what, I stall out again and dump the Doc. Now I am starting to get a little pissed. I am not sure about others, but when my Italian blood starts boil, I learn things. I learned that the easy way to move the DR on a hill is leave it in gear, pull the front wheel in the air and pivot it on the rear. I also learned that I was getting sick and tired of picking up the bike. All of a sudden a little voice went off in my simple brain "Well dummy, if you are sick of picking up your bike, don't drop it. Suck it up buttercup and get er done".

Well between being called buttercup and having boiling Italian blood pulsing I focused and hit the deactivations hard. Head up, eyes up, look at the crest, lean back then forward, stay vertical on the pegs.

http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/856/485Suskwa_8.jpeg

And do you know what, it started to click. As I was just about out of the deactivation stretch I thought "this is actually fun when it all works out". We then rode out before the rain, stopped at the phone booth (get your mind out of the gutter sparklr) and parted ways. On the 15 clicks back to the truck, I really appreciated the DR again. When it is upright and on two wheels, it is quite agile.

Well, that was our ride. There is now a great route that we can do, Hazelton to Smithers on gravel.

Hope you guys have some good rides this week.

Ride planned for Sunday around Hazelton as it looks like a nicer day than Saturday. The notion was to ride both ends of Gookla if possible and find the missing link. Depending on the participants we could also go up the Red Rose Mine trail to the point where my PIG squeals "you might as well shoot me now and toss me on the spit". 2T will like the single and a half track trail. Otherwise just find dirt and roll with it.

Just froooooze my butt off this afternoon with a "quick" 200 mile run out to Aiyansh & back ...very scenic but felt as cold as a month ago!(need to wear out the tyres so I can change them!!!) I may get out Sunday, but only locally ...have fun. Probably try the Wedeene/Onion Lake...looks like the snow may have gone(?)

Jim, hope someone can meet up with you next week - I'm out of town. We'll meet one day!

Red Rose needs a cleaning ....3 big trees down in a row and the route around will make a pig squeal
Chain saw needed for the run in plus last week I only got about 6km in from the pit and hit snow

The climb into 9 mile mountain will also test the pig ...some fresh graded logging road up the face with some decent grades

Can always slam the lower Suskwa along the Bulkley....that could make a pig bark

I'll bring my pruning saw lol

Kispiox to mitten
Kispiox and check the logging rds just above the Kitwanga back road on this end looks like they go through instead of just dropping into farmer fields

And I have bought a Home in 2 mile.....life is good

Hey guys,

Wish this could be a ride report but still bikeless. But alas, I went up the extew fsr for some exploring and checked out the falls. The road is pretty good up there and would make for a good ride. First 3-4km are pretty lose (read freshly graded, with lots of loose boulders) and there are some recent road repairs from some not so favorable material, but all in all the road is pretty good as they are hauling out of there. I went to all three falls and the trip was pretty enjoyable.

Has anyone been to the end of the road on the west side of the river? I went a ways but it started to close in pretty good and the dog was getting anxious for a run so we turned around. (one nice deactivation up there to practice in, although it was passable in my truck so maybe not as bad as the ones hunter and2t went through)

Hey guys. First off I appologise for no pics.

Tonight sparklr and I got away for a nice evening rip up the Upper Kitimat FSR. What a great time, with me trying to show up sparklr on a baby deactivation after he stalled out in it. Well that ended up with me busting half a nut after the baby ditch and allowing the doc to have a break on it's side. Oh, if I only would have kept it rubber side down.

And now it is corona's and nachos in the hotel room.

Anyone up for a Terrace rip one evening, or even coffee one evening this week? I would love to meet the Terrace folk while I am here.

Thanks guys.

Oh ya sparklr, I turned to reserve at the 4 way in Terrace.

Wasn't a great evening for pics, but still a great ride! Managing to stay dry was an even better outcome. I can't believe I stalled it, not once but twice. The trip home from Onion Lake ski trails via the Weedene was awesome, only several snow patches to deal with. However it did end up being a high-beam event to make the passage. Nearer the Kitimat end some remedial work apparently has taken place eliminating all pot holes and the famous skid plate removal dip, conveniently substituted by a multi -stoned texture. Therefore that passage might seem less an option than say perhaps going the other direction or perhaps Whitebottom along the Skeena.

As discussed Wed/ Thurs are my best options as I definitely need to facilitate some remedial action for the last few days of adventure.

The weather network is showing Thurs as being sunny and clear, so let's plan for Thurs night to meet at the same spot and do some more exploring, for me anyways. I have a co-worker here that said that we can go from the onion to thw Whitebottom FSR. Is this doable?

I am ending at 430 every day and can be ready to ride at 5. Can you steal away a litte earlier and meet around 530 to extend our play time?

As for tonight and tomorrow, my offer still stands for a Terrace coffee. One night I am going to check out the red sands place that everyone is talking about.

Thanks guys.

Tonight is beautiful. I am outta here :)

See you guys tomorrow. Thanks for taking the time out of your schedules to go for rips.

The best I can do so far is more than likely 6. I have to go into Terrace tomorrow AM and pick up the Wifi @ 5. I might be able to arrange something, but probably Kermode needs to email me with how I can contact him during the day. That way if I can squeak an earlier depart, we can meet at my house and ride the Wedeene to Onion and pick up bchunter and go from there.

It was a good evening for riding and for me it was a bonus that I managed to get home in one piece. Having hit a deep de-activation/wash-out at 60+ and managing to keep the pig up-right, I consider myself quite fortunate. A few aches and pains this morning was the extent of the damage.

Good to meet you bchunter and thanks for the boost when the pig decided to dig-in:clap:.

On the ride was sparklr, Kitimat KLR, Kermode_KLR and myself. We met at the Onion Lake pull out just after 5:00 pm, well, that is when I arrived. We headed off up the Upper Kitimat FSR and took a side road, the Schist Creek FSR (please correct me if I spelt this wrong).

That was a great road, hard packed with a few small water bars to make it entertaining. There were a couple half decent sized washouts as well - keep these in mind for later.

First photo op on a bridge over a nice canyon river:

http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/856/485April_29_1_.JPG

Even though the DR was outnumber 3 to 1, it was very happy to make new friends :hb:

We headed up one spur to see how far we could go. This was an awesome spur, it was lightly overgrown with a nice mix of hard pack, loose rock, water bars, and gravel.

http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/856/485April_29_2_copy.jpg

We continued to make our way up this trail until we hit a point and decided to turn back and check out another spur. On the way out, Kermode decided to test my skills and put yet another obstacle in my path:

http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/856/485April_29_3_copy.jpg

So I helped him complete his obstacle making manoeuvre by helping the KLR out of the rut and went back to my bike to take my turn. I did not play by the rules as I busted brush on the side of the line and circumvented the boobie trap. No one said the DR has to play by KLR rules :P

So down we go and take another spur. This was one of the best roads I have run. Nice hard pack with some great washouts to play through. That's right 2T, I am actually enjoying these dips in the road. I was enjoying them so much that on the last one I took an inside line and passed Kermode, ripped by sparklr, and tried to be super cool with a fancy turn in the middle of an uphill road and dumped the doc on it's side. Judging by sparklr's laughing, I guestimated I got a 8.9 for artistic effort.

On the way down I just could not help stop for a pic:

http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/856/485April_29_4_copy.jpg

This is beautiful country, some that I have never seen. I am used to interior mountains and terrain, not coastal. It was beautiful to ride through that area and take it all in, the smells, the views, the sounds. The ride down would have been more fun if the sun had not been right in my eyes pretty much the whole way. I was taking it kinda easy since it was a tad bit hard to see. On that note, I approached the final washout before hitting the Upper Kitimat FSR and saw Kermode and sparklr waiting on the other side. I thought "well that is nice of those guys to wait and point out where the washout is". Once I pulled up to them, I heard the story that Kemode did not see the washout and hit it at 60+ km/h

After that scare we stopped and chatted at the Onion parking lot for a bit and then moseyed to West Lake for a group photo op:

http://www.dualsportbc.com/photogallery/data/856/485April_29_5_copy.jpg

The road into the campsite was amazing, nice tight hemlock and lots of potholes to swerve around. I was feeling so elated from the nights ride that I was feeling at one with the DR. It would swerve when I wanted it to, zig this way, zag that way, curve by this tree, and slide around that corner. That is the feeling I strive for, when you become one with the machine and it goes where you want it to my just looking and focusing on your route :hf:

After the photo, we all went our ways with Kermode and myself ripping back to Terrace.

Again, I have to thank sparklr for the two rides and Kermode and Kitimat for taking the time to show me some new turf. I was in Terrace for 4 nights and rode for 3. Now that is one great way to beat being a slave to the hotel

Have a great weekend everyone.

That was a good run until we got to the upperpart of Chist(?) Creek and the "rock gardens" ...I really don't like that stuff ...especially when my chain comes off & I have to pick the pig up (makes me feel like getting a nice smooth road bike with shaft drive).
