New Orange popsicle

Well, I finally took the plunge and said goodby to the GS1150 (now in Okanagan) and took delivery of a nice new 950 Adventure.

The bike ran rough right from get go, but the dealer recomended that I do the first 1000ks and see if it cleared out. It didn't.

Anyway, Wifey and I decided to make the most of the weather and head into Washington for the weekend to complete the 'break in' ready for the 1st service on Tuesday. Got to Aldergrove border line up and switched off to let it cool down and then went to start it and ---------nothing !!After checking out the fuses, I discovered the ignition fuse had blown. Put another in -----pop! Then another----pop!

So decided to call in Son with truck and 2 1/2 hrs later we dumped it back at Holeshot.

So, totally ruined weekend and bike is only a week old. I am trying to remain calm and trying to convince myself that the stories about KTM's and their dealers are exagerated !

We'll see this week !!!!!

Bad bit of luck with your new bike. :?It shouldn't run rough - ever. "See if it settles out" - tell them to tune it, or take it back. It is a precision machine that should run like a... like a... BMW - almost! I feel your pain, I'm sure it will all work out.Congrats on your new bike!

Actually, Wifey was well impressed with the comfort and lack of buffeting. The GS with custom seats was always going to be a bit of an act to follow regarding pillions, but with the topbox and backpad along with those huge bags (to carry all thier crap!), she was well impressed.

3. Glad to hear you remained calm & saved what you could of your weekend with Mrs. IanB.
4. I agree with Paul; "see if it will settle out in the first 1000km" is bullsh_t. See if a technician actually signed off on the pdi; I suspect not.
5. Perhaps you'll articulate to the dealership how you took a chance as advised for the first 1000km, and experienced a completely spoilt weekend & then demand a complete sorting-out / free first service.
6. Congrats again on the new bike; I'm sure that all of this will get sorted out and you'll enjoy many many miles on your very cool LC8.

Don't be put off by this minor (I hope) irritation on my Bike. I absolutely love riding it

Bearing in mind the arrival of the 990 injection version shortly, You should be able to get a 950 for about $17500 with bags.

I havn't gone quite as far as 'free 1st service', but have said that in view of the fact that KTM will be paying for the stripdown (on Warranty), I only expect to pay for the actual items that are in the Ist service, not the taking it apart & putting it back together

I guess you don't want to hear about how well mine ran over the weekend? I can't say enough good things about the suspension, where you really notice how well it works on logging roads. Puts everything else I've ridden to shame.

I did however notice a fairing bolt has gone missing. Strangely, this is a bolt that has to be removed to do the first service.

Skidmark has told me that Gord, the ex-Britten Mechanic will work and has done work on 950s

I also had 1 of the tailight bulbs not working which I told you know who when I booked it for it's first service. Still not fixed, so thinking it was just a bulb I did it on my own. Bulb was ok and it turned out to be no ground from the ground wire lead. I spliced the ground wire with the ground wire from the 2nd tailight bulb and it works now. Saves taking the bike back to you know who.

I'll check with Skagit Powersports tomorrow to see if American dealers honour warranty on our bikes.

Actually, the incident has not put me off the bike at all. I'm just glad we were not any further away ! In fairness, Wally was gutted when we turned up with the bike in the back of Alex's truck. He offered to pull someone straight off their work and find the problem, but I said it's better to keep it and get the whole thing straight. The mechanic asked me if I wanted all the immisions crap removed while he was at it (the famous 'Canisterectomy'), so I said yes. Apparently, they run a lot better like that anyway (needle moves up 1 notch). There is no doubt in my mind that niether yours nor mine, were properly prepared in the way KTM expects, when things like your bulb (and possibly the electrical fault on mine) would have been sorted without the new owner ever finding out. I think the whole setup in the maintenance dept, just operates on a wing and a prayer !

Dispite all that, I am prepared to see how they tackle this in terms of the bikes post service performance and how they try to bill itI would much prefer to have a fantastic bike with a crap dealer, than the other way round and I suspect that is the case! Speak to you later

How did things work out with the new Orange Beast? What was causing the main fuse to blow? My guess would be starter jammed. I hope your dealer got things worked out for you.

Hope to go on a 950 ride with you coastal boys sometime.

Not quite so straightforward as a jammed starter, I'm afraid.

Having spent hours trying to trace the short, they finally found that the short is in the wiring loom. This means that they have to get one from KTM. So, as of today, if the loom is not here on Tuesday, they say they are going to remove the loom from another 's' model that they have in a crate still. I have suggested that they simply run a replacement wire outside the loom and get it going andthen replace the loom at a later date. Seems a lot easier than taking one out of a new bike !

Anyway, I guess I'll find out on Tuesday. Bloody frustrating though !!!!

Yes, that would be frustrating, Hopefully they will have you up and running by next week sometime.

Raining all day here today, so I installed the TKC80 that I got from Skidmark. The front tire was very easy to change.( I broke the bead with my hands). I have heard that the rear tire is not so easy. Hopefully I will not have to try out on the trail someday.

Is this the main harness?

If u make a stink will they just replace the bike.....thats what I'd shoot for(U have less than 1000km's I beleave).

Thats prety tough having a problem like that on your new toy. Hope you get good service..it makes a differance.

Are you going to be heading up to the Coles ride at Timithy Lake? If so, I hope to see you there. I think it will be fun having a bunch of 950's around to compare notes and modifications.

Yep, the bike got fixed sort of. It quickly became evident that the wiring loom was on backorder, so I told them to bypass the offending wire (outside the loom) to keep me going. They did this and removed the emmisions stuff at the same time, raising the needle by one slot as well.

Bike goes fine and I absolutely love it. No real offroad yet, but I have a load of stuff coming for that, like Bars, Nobbies,high fender etc, so I'm looking forward to trying it out.

Will be doing the Dead zone (in 3 weeks time) and the Coles run on it, so I look forward to catching up with you there, if not before.

Metzeller Karoo's. I think the tck's are probably better all round, but I got a fairly good deal on the Karoo's. Probably much cheaper to source the tck's from the states. Try http://arizonamoto.com.
