    2011 KLR 650 Oil burning

    I have a 2011 KLR 650 that burns oil during freeway operation above 5000 rpm. I need a fix so any resources in terms of machine shops ( Mongoose ?? ) or anyone who knows a KLR guru I would apreciate some direction .

    Never heard of a post '08 KLR burning oil, but a 685 kit would solve that problem as well as smooth out the vibrations during high (for a KLR) RPM cruising.
    Burnaby Kawasaki (604 525 9393) would be a good source of info

    A 16 or 17 tooth front sprocket is probably the easiest fix. My '08 burns oil above about 4200, and with a 16 tooth sprocket I can keep it there and get an indicated 110km/h.

    The oil burn was 1l from Surrey to Ashcroft. I installed an FV345 Fram PCV and repeated the trip this last August long weekend. I duplicated RPM as well as speed (5000 to 5500 RPM, 110 kmph to 125 kmph) my oil consumption was reduced to 100 ml.

    I just thought I would post as I was about to spend $800.00 for the Schnitz big bore piston kit.

    I was in a local shop this week and they were working on a newer KLR that smoked so bad it would kill every bug around it in a 30' radius. Apparently Kawasaki has been replacing the piston/rings/etc under warranty. They were going to on this bike anyway. It wasn't the Kawasaki shop I was at, but it was going there soon.

    Ther dealer stated that unless I burned more than 1l per 1000km there would be no warranty service. As a career licensed mechanic I am very weary of warranty repairs as they are done on the cheap for the most part.

    Any engine builder can tell you that cylinders and rings must be bored and fitted to suit, and when large production runs are initiated by large OEM there is an engineered production line variance.

    From what I have experienced Kawasaki has had problems with the production line variance of ring eng gap and piston fit. Just my two cents worth.

    Hold it wide open in 2nd on the freeway for 1000 kms...betcha burn more than 1L of oil. Would that qualify??
