A couple of us are headed up to the top end of the Island {Mahatta, Cape Scott, Raft Cove} if any one wants to join us. Ride up Friday and camp or start early, ride up and meet us in Port Mcneill at 8:30 am saturday. Will be an all dayer so pack some snackage and water. Meet at the ferry dock at 8:30 or at the Petrocan shortly there after.

Hey Tom, we may just see you there. The canoe trip in is nice except for the odd logjam. Looks like the weather will co-operate so have a good one.

Didn't make it out to raft cove this time, three of us travelled out to Mahatta via Merry Widow Mtn instead. The road up the mountain was pretty challenging with a lot of debris pulled down by the heavy snow including one slide on the steep section which the three of us took turns bouncing our way over. We then headed out to Mahatta and on the road around the inlet we bumped into a traveller on a R-100 GS coming out, nice fellow {he came to my island today so I went for a scoot with him on the backroads}. Played around on the Teetas, they had just been resurfaced with loose shot rock which made for a pretty spooky ride {one boo boo and over the side you go}. Out to Mahatta was good but the road to North Brooks was long and boring{ hadn't changed any from the last time I rode it} and will go to the bottom of my ride list. Logged 350 KM of backroads for the day.

sounds like you had fun just the same... we enjoyed ourselves sat and sun but when the rains came monday morning, it was time to go.found out that you CAN make it down the river on a 2.5M tide and be an hour late for high slack at that... the first part was a little dicey though, just squeaked over and around a few logs. there were foursurfers from courtenaywho we met just as we launched the canoe, and they had a 12 ft tin boat, they told us later about having to get out and drag it over logs four times at the start. flew my kite once on saturday afternoon, then not enough wind. went for a swim in the surf and the river as well, was not bad with a wetsuit. and of course i consumed a few malt beverages, wondering if i was going to see you guys or not. the beach was quite busy but we were at the river mouth so less people as the trail comesout at the other end of the beach, but you knew that anyway.no fresh water at all on the north part of the beach, so we had many people borrowing our canoe to get across the river to the other water spot, a small creek that runs all year round.

Darned rain, we worked in it all day yesterday but I guess it's needed. I can remember going into the drink a few Januarys back when yarding the canoe over some of those river obstacles, not so warm, but did manage a fire and a warm-up. We went around merry widow to look at Maynard lake after Scotty 905 mentioned how empty it looked, he was right, the lake is the lowest I've ever seen it, what was lakebottom is now a stump cemetary. I guess when they're selling the power to the grid they want max production even if it empties the lake.

the lake was a lot lower than that last year, right after they drained it the first time to the point where you could easily drive right across the former lakebed to the trees on the other side. the boat ramp is really the start of a road. it is truly a stump farm though... missed you on the combined EX with club Z, was hoping to catch up with you there.

I was looking forward to that ex, but that weekend I had a little camping trip to set up for my oldest daughter and 16 of her friends, boy was that relaxing!

Hi -am hoping to go out to Raft Cove before it gets too cold via kayak. Can you tell me where the best place is to put a kayak into the Macjack? I know some of the roads, recently up to cape scott. Thanks for any tips!

The best launch is from the Winter Harbour side... You take the mainline out from Holberg, drive past Winter Harbour, past Grant bay... You end up on an alder covered road that has been opened up like a tunnel for one way traffic...This road eventually parallels the river {150 meters away} until you come a turnaround spot and a boardwalk that simplifies packing your boat to a good launch point... From here it is about 8KM of paddling to get to the lagoon at the river mouth...

    Hi Island Hopper
Thanks for your response back - I missed this message in November.
I was just trying to make sense of the directions (i have a mediocre map) - The road you're talking about - is it the Moore Lake FSR? Kind a looks like it on the map.
Is this place easier than going to a place off of Raft Main or Macjack Main (up the river).
Thanks again for any other help/directions - very much appreciated!

Moore Lake FSR will get you close to the Macjack but I was told there are alot of trees across the river at that point making the river impossible to navigate.
You'll be much better off taking Topknot main. There's a good parking area there now and a boardwalk down to the river. And check the tide tables.
