Check where the start relay is on your bus. Some Thomas busses had it above the muffler. No start after heat soak. Have a great trip.

Ican't make the trip, sorry. Heat soak: After tearing down the highway for a few hours you make a quick pit stop for fuel etc. Then when you turn the key to go you have a no crank situation. During the pit stop the heat from the muffler has "soaked" up into the poorly placed relay causing it to not work. After a long wait things cool off and the relay once again gets the starter the juice and off you go. Careful use of a screwdriver across the starter terminals is a work-aroundas there is nothing wrong with the starter just the relay when located above the muffler. Your bus might have had the relay already relocated. And yes I've had this happen with a Thomas rear engine school bus, but I've forgotten the model year.

Yup had this happen when I picked up our Thomas Bus last year. The starter relay is right beside the muffler. That would be the passenger side of our bus. Lucky for me I have owned lots of old junk cars and it only took a few minutes to get the old girl started.

250cc_thanks for the tip i'll check our rig today. joker, you should take a trip without your son to familiarize yourself with the land/people/customs etc, before you take your son down.that's just my 2 penny opinion though.it is a huge area, and i think back to the 1st time i went to baja,i wouldn't have been able to look after anyone, let alone my son. But i did take my 16 yr old (young man-he's not a kid any more) last feburary, and we both had a lifetime memorable trip. but that was also my 4th or 5th trip to baja. I still am amazed that a land that is DIRT,SAND,ROCKS, can draw most in so deeply!

Hey Reid just give your new ride an official send off old school.Get a tie down with a bottle of Jagermeister attached and smash the bottle off the front of the grill like they used to do when crisoning ships and she should be good to go.

now that's one item i forget to put on my list!! thanks rocketman, that sounds like an appropriate send off. but i do believe that a bottle of corona would be more in keeping in the theme of baja bound . that was alway done for good luck i think.i never hurts to have a bit more good luck.

Have a great time cactusreid, maybe I'll join you guys next winter.

I'm heading down with some fellow Advriders in March this year. Gaspipe, me, jonz, Lasvegasrider, maybe BigDogAdventures.com & some otherswill be roaming around in BCSur for a coupla weeks. Second week lands on Holy week (Semana Santa) so fuel and lodging could be problematic, but we all have huge tanks and bedrolls/tarps so if nothing, it will be an adventure.

Ballenas Pacificos and a campfire, nothing like it.

    Buena suerte, amigo!

Thank you-all 371 lookers and curious souls. we tentatively have a full pull of 8 hardy (fool) dudes that wish to ride the dirt/sand/rocks of baja. but I will keep this thread open till we leave at least, in case we have any last minute dropouts,as so often can happen on trips like this. the new bus is on the home stretch, the only thing fancier is mr pattision's cruise ship. she should be luxury all the way there! over n out for now cactusreid

tom I do want to hear about where you park on the pacific side, as we are going down again in nov of 08,as we have put a team together of 50+ dudes to race the 1000. it is supposed to be a loop in 08 not a top to bottom, which should be a whole lot easier for a first attempt.

Been home from Baja for a week now, and I already want to go back. Joined Reid and the Kamloops Bus for this year's trip. Got to thank the boys for looking out for this newbie and for getting me home safe! The new bus is smooooth, fast, comfortable, and only slightly scratched from my late night incident with a garbage can. Some pics from the trip....

    Fantastic photos Howard!

I'll make sure Niki and Sage catch wind of your photos. They were gutted whentheir camera was disappeared by the Puertecitos road.

    Cheers,

Thanks again Reid, still waiting for the invoice for the bus repairs after my garbage can incident!

Next time I'd like to get more riding shots, but that means I'll have to pick up the pace so I can be in the front of the pack!

And if you need a support crew for November, count me in! I've already enlisted a few more bodies for a February 2009 trip, so it looks like I'll have to keep my eye open for a bus of my own! I actually know of a Thomas bus for sale in Vancouver.....
