Unfortunately I won'tbe able to attend the Orca Ride this year.I leave for work about a week before theride but would like to offer my help with the prep. As far as equipment goes I do have a chainsaw and other items which destroy unwanted foliage. I return on the 9th of March so let me know what I can do.
I'm in for helping out, tools are limited to GPS and machete, although I could probably clear some brush with the 950.....
Ready and willing.
I'll carry a small saw, axe and spade, note book and pencil (no GPS).
Show me a route and I'll ride it, clear it, mark it, note it and report back.
Sign me up !!!

Can't waite for the ride. Be sure to post a few pics of the routs.
My life has a superb cast, but I can't figure out the plot...
Happy to help when I can.
Hand saw, hatchet, GPS (once I figure out how to work it).
I have two chain saws.
Famous Last Words" Watch This"
I have a chainsaw that put a couple of nice holes in my seat during clearing for the VMC in Sooke. Should work for this.
Wow.. With all these chainsaws, we can start our own firewood business.

one thing that might work well if wa have 3 or 4 guys with gps you can average out the marks to get more acurate maps??
windaddiction wrote:I found the best way to lay out a GPS route is head out into one area of the ride and spend a day or 2 and decide where u want it to go . The next weekend go do another area and so on.(This gets u out of the house a few extra times ."But honey, I have 50 people depending on me" )one thing that might work well if wa have 3 or 4 guys with gps you can average out the marks to get more acurate maps??
After u have all the "Dirt / bush " areas done start from camp where the event is based and "RIDE THE WHOLE ROUTE IN 1 DAY".
This will give you a complete GPS track with no interuptions in the route, and how long it takes to complete.
Mark the start at the gate leaving the camp, and mark everywhere a new trail or road is taken. Be sure to mark "Bail out" points. If someone is having bike problems or just getting tired these quick routs home will help a lot.
Just my 2 cents
My life has a superb cast, but I can't figure out the plot...
We checked out the hills beyond SunnyDaze today... still way too much snow to work on setting up trails. :?
4 of us were out that way on Sunday; kinda surprised to find it lightly snowing!! Probably need some more thaw time, 'cause we rode till we couldn't. Still is nice to just get out and ride (and slide!)![]()
It snowed again today.. this is the coldest March I can remember. Planning to pre-run the C loop soon... at least most of it is lower down. Looking for riders with a GPS to tag along to chart the route. Haven't picked a day yet as the forecast still looks bleak.
Lets ride it next Monday, I'll bring out "Olive" so I can run the GPS and get it started..
I can ride Sunday witht the GPS
Monday or Tuesday looks like the best weather. Dave, you're looking a wee bit ill, probably should call in sick.

I would love to be ill but I've already been off all this week because of my daughter. I'll go out Sunday and do some exploring up the Gorden Main. See if I can find any wortwhile side routes.
I might get out Sunday and Monday then (not sure yet). Anyone else?
Dave, I guess the viewpoint you mentioned off Gordon Main will most likely be snowed in but worth a look. Same with the plane crash site. It's snowing like crazy here as I type... the Malahat is snow covered. Enough with the snow already!
Seeing as I am unemployed as of Friday, and the wife and kids are out of my hair on Monday![]()
Well; time's marching on and ..........
I'm looking to ride on Saturday and maybe Sunday afternoon to set some A / B trails for the Orca. I could use some help (not least to get up some of the hills) and would welcome some company.
I'm thinking of linking up some trails I know starting from Serious Coffee at Mill bay and ranging over to Shawnigan with the aim of making a good half day of A/B riding for either the morning or afternoon of the run.
The other half of the day will be out by Burnt Bridge I think and I'm hoping to scout that the weekend of the 12th and 13th and again I could use some help. These two weekends are the only time I have available between now and the run so I want to make the most of them.
I borrowed a GPS unit from JD and I've never used one so could use help with that end of things too. I think I can set waypoints but I'm guessing theres a right and wrong way to go about this to make the info useful to others. Anyone who can bring a GPS and the knowledge to use it would be great.
I'm thinking of flagging the route too and measuring distances. Any advise from Deadzone organisers is welcome on how best to mark the route or decsribe the route with notes and distances. I looked at the roll chart for the Noobie ride and it looks straightforward enough. I gues you have to be disciplined about taking notes and making sketches as you ride the route.
Once I'm done with all this I could also use help with making sense of the GPS data collected and writing up the notes in roll chart format.
Post up. Lets do it.
