I'm interested in what synthetic oil some of you may be using in your KTM EXC models? KTM recommends using the Motorex Power Synt 10w/50 for the 2009 450. Is anyone trying other brands? Spunkys is charging $22.99/litre for the Motorex. The oil is meet JASO MA specs. I was looking into the Amsoil 20w/50 synthetic which has this JASO MA-MA2 standard. It also ranks #1 out of all the motorcycle synthetc oils. I can also get it for about $11-12.00/litre.

I can't give you any recommendations on what synthetic to use as I use plain old dino rotella in my 625smc and 200sx (and ATF in my Beta) but if you want to have some oil entertainment you should have a look at the oil forum on ktmtalk.com.... Every time I read that forum I have a good giggle. It is better than religious and political debates.

Thanks sam. I will have to have a look at that site. It is quite funny how some topics can get so heated.

I have been running Rotella 5w/40 synthetic in my 640 for the last 60,000 + KM with good results... The first 40,000 I ran Maxima 5W/40 synth and with it I found the shifting not as smooth and the cost of the oil more than double the Shell product....

If you buy it in the 20 L pails it works out to about $6 per litre...

I have run Amsoil in my last two LC4 KTMs with no problem. It is a great oil with good lubrication qualities and one of the highest antiacid additives. This is important if you store your bike for long periods. I have also started using thie chainlube which works great and leaves your bike clean.

I have been using Mobile 1 -5/50 synthetic in my 2005KTM 400 ( 14,000K) and no problems as well as my 2006KTM 540 (19,000K) and no problems. Neither bike is using oil and I have just done valve and oil changes. Moble 1 is available at Canadian Tire and lots of other places.

I get the Rottela oils from the Furney Distributing Shell Bulk plant in Port Mcneill... The first time I went in for it he brought some in from Alberta for me and the last time he had it in stock....

I have been looking for a good alternative to the Motorex also. It's $27 a litre at holeshot.
I just got some Castrol RS 4T 10W/50 synthetic from a shop in Bellingham, $11 a litre to try for my next oil change. The ipone 10W/50 is available at War Motorsports in Abby for around $11 also.

    Thanks Guys for your input.

I think I'm going to try the Amsoil 20w/50. They will warranty any oil failures on the bike. I see Motorex in the Royal Distributing catalogue is going for $19.95/L. They have other brand as well. By the time you pay shipping it won't be any cheaper.

I've used Motul in both of my KTM's no high mileage claims to back it up but everything is smooth. It meets the spec, is cheaper, and available.
