my bike has only 15 hrs on in and 1500 km. every time i go for a ride i have to fill up the engine again as there is no oil in the sight glass. it is not pushing blue. i'm trying to get it into the shop for warrenty but would like any imput on what this might be?
check to see if the engine side is low and transmission side high. it could be flowing over. Faulty reed valve.
Is the bike level, not on the side stand? Even on a work stand you will get a different reading than when the bike is on level surface and held vertical.Originally Posted by Rock Chucker 1

I am having the same issue with my KTM 530, we've already replaced the piston, piston rings and valve seals and it's still doing it. I didn't insist on a leak down and compression test before and after but I think that could've told us something. I also have the front and rear chambers for oil so we're going to see if it is transferring now.
Mine did that too, had to refill after 4 hour ride. But now that I have more hours on it, it seems to have stopped using (or losing) oil. I have no idea what went on, but maybe they use it until broken in? I have done 4 afternoon rides and the dead zone now without having to add any. Also, keep in mind, from the top to bottom of the glass is not much oil on these bikes with the separate chambers for motor and tranny. It doesn't take much oil to top up the glass. Twice while mine was new, it suddenly puked out blue smoke for 5 full minutes, then stopped. No idea why, but I think the crank breather fed a big gulp of oil to the carb each time. Once it stopped, it ran fine. Put more hours on it, then if it still uses oil, take it in for warranty so they can't tell you it's because it isn't broken in yet. That was my plan when it suddenly stopped.

So, I just stumble upon this thread and low and behold my 09 450 is doing the same. I rode 6 hrs the other day and looked in the window and down it was. It only took 100ml to fill it back up while on the road. Ive got 3000km on the bike and no way should it be using oil. Have any of you found the direct reason for the consumption?????? It really "X#!*X me off while riding with 6 guys with old beat up high mileage bikes and I am the only one using oil on these trips.
I have a couple of Kawas. I switched to using Amsoil synthetic and their oil consumption went down and their power went up. It's expensive stuff but seems to be worth it.
If your %100 sure there is no transfer into the transmission side you could be looking at a bad rings or bad valve seals. This year of engine is famous for it. But they also had trouble with oil transfer into the transmission. You have to make sure what you have.
